I like some rationalizeations that Rihanna went "dark" for this album- is this her Erotica? It may not be as happy and peppy as her other fare, but it's not like she went Bjork. (same with Kelly Clarkson, when she released My December).

Well I only heard the first single (which is still the main reason if people check out an album or not, or more accurately, the only proper chance most pop artist can have for their albums to get attention) and it's the same Ne-Yo slow R&B stuff she's been doing since 2006 and that's why her sales are down. Plain and simple, she has no built-in fanbase and people would have expected a more uptempo track like Umbrella/DSTM/Disturbia. Since there are other females filling that gap these days, Rihanna gets less attention.

Rihanna's album is quite "uncommercial" for her. There are a few songs like Hard that are meant for radio, but this album seems like she's really playing the sympathy card. There are a lot of references to violence and everything on this album (even Russian Roulette ends in a gunshot) that I think it's too much for a lot of casual fans who just want Rihanna to keep it simple. I've heard several people calling it her "My December" and I won't be too surprised if she readies up a more conventional commercial album for the 2010 Xmas season, because this album won't be milked for 18 months like GGGB.

It is a decent album but without any killer singles, she will probably top out around 600-800k if lucky, she doesn't have Britney or Beyonce's fanbase.

Susan Boyle Tops Billboard 200 With Stellar First Week Sales

December 02, 2009

By Keith Caulfield, L.A.

YouTube sensation and former "Britain's Got Talent" contestant Susan Boyle's debut album "I Dreamed a Dream" opens at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with 701,000 copies sold in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan -- the best sales week for an album in the U.S. this year.

2009's previous high-water mark came when Eminem's "Relapse" sold 608,000 in its opening week. In fact, Boyle's sales frame is the best the chart has seen since AC/DC's "Black Ice" bowed with 784,000 upon its release in October 2008.

Boyle's SYCO/Columbia effort was released last Monday, Nov. 23, and the sales tracking week ended at the close of business on Sunday, Nov. 29.

The arrival of "I Dreamed a Dream" also marks the best opening week for a female artist's debut album since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. Boyle beats out Ashanti for the title, as her self-titled debut began with 503,000 in 2002.

All told, in SoundScan's tracking history, only one other debut album has seen a bigger opening week. Snoop Dogg's album "Doggystyle" barked with 803,000 in its first week back in 1993.

Boyle wasn't the only artist to drop an album in the very busy Thanksgiving shopping week, as the reality TV star led a packed release schedule.

2009 "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert's debut "For Your Entertainment" starts at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 198,000 copies. Last week, "Idol" champ Kris Allen saw his self-titled debut bow at No. 11 with 80,000.

Rihanna's fourth album "Rated R" climbs in at No. 4 with 181,000 -- the

young diva's best sales week yet. Her previous best came when her third album "Good Girl Gone Bad" started with 162,000 at No. 2 in 2007.

Lady Gaga's new eight-song quasi-EP "The Fame Monster" bows at No. 5 with 174,000 while her first album "The Fame" rises from No. 34 to No. 6 (151,000; up 429%). The latter "Fame's" total jumps this week because it combines sales of her debut set in addition to a two-disc deluxe "The Fame" package that contains both "The Fame" and the new "Monster" disc.

As for holdovers in the top 10, Andrea Bocelli's "My Christmas" stands strong at No. 2 for a third week as it shifts 218,000 (up 18%) while Miley Cyrus' Wal-Mart-exclusive EP "The Time Of Our Lives" vaults from No. 29 to No. 7 with 150,000 (up 385%) thanks in part to its $5 sale tag at the retailer last week. Taylor Swift's "Fearless" moves from No. 10 to No. 8 with 125,000 (up 48%), Carrie Underwood's "Play On" holds at No. 9 with 124,000 (up 44%) and Norah Jones' "The Fall" falls from No. 3 to No. 10 with 110,000 (down 39%).

Last week's Billboard 200 No. 1, John Mayer's "Battle Studies," slips to No. 13 in its second week with 92,000 (down 68%).

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Nov. 29) totaled 10.73 million units, up 34% compared to the sum last week (7.99 million) and down 12% compared to the Thanksgiving sales week of 2008 (12.21 million). Year to date album sales stand at 320.2 million, down 13% compared to the same total at this point last year (369.9 million).

you are just so bored... every other post you talk about reissues and how low they are...just move on.

re-issues have been around for a while.

Considering that 151000 pple are still willing to sell out for a 2-cd set for lady gaga, some may not have gotten the fame and hence, it's good for them. those who had bought the 8-track album or ep whatever they wanna label it 174k... all in all, lady gaga sold 325k records this week.

so move on...

will susan boyle drop like a bomb from here onwards... we'll see

"Empire State of Mind" will hold onto No. 1 on the Hot 100, by a comfortable margin.

Great numbers for SuBo- and the industry needs something like that (though overall numbers are still down from last year).

whatvr bitch, but the fact is that this is just a milking the damn cows as they are still relevant, sorry, but for me it's so lame to re-release a damn same album with 8 !! new songs and also use the same name so that the apples doesn't fall far from the damn tree: The Fame, The Fame Monster...wht next?, The Fame Allien vs Predator?---->duh!...the same with the Sasha Feast and Taylor Shift :vogue:

Go releasing a fucking new album with a new name!

oh my spelling, i should consider going back to school

"Empire State of Mind" will hold onto No. 1 on the Hot 100, by a comfortable margin.

Great numbers for SuBo- and the industry needs something like that (though overall numbers are still down from last year).

701k!?!?!?!?...damn it! that's the true Queen of damn Pock!

as for Gaga , I read in another forum someone making fun and laughing about the fact that Gaga cannot pass the Number 4 spot in Billboard 200?, is that true? I know Gaga's album sales are not the big deal(although one could argue due to the low nowadays sales) but with all the hype with her singles are getting one could think The Fame was number 1 for several weeks, or is it just like The Black Eyed Peas? whose lattest singles succes do not reflect hugely on their albums sales? but then again albums do not even reach 5 million nowadays...oh bring me back the glorious old days when the best selling album would surpass the 10 or 20 million mark!

wow no spelling mistakes this time!!....

OMG at Shakira...too funny.

I think Gaga's been a bit overhyped too...the numbers are pretty disappointing for her on a black friday. I bet it doesn't reach a million.

That's because the sales are split. Everyone knows that the majority of sales for the Fame Deluxe were driven by the 8 new songs. The original album has been selling steady, maybe 30K or so per week. If you remove that amount that leaves the deluxe version still with 121K. Add that to the Monster sales of 174K and that's a total of 295K which would be the 2nd highest sales for the week and fantastic for an EP and better than sales from established "hot" artist Rihanna.

for some reason, i thought Lady Gaga sold 4 million of the fame so far...but i guess that was dumb cause no one but Taylor has sold that...am i right? i was just shocked when i saw it at 1.8 million?

and why does everyone LOL at Shakira? I think she's ok. I mean was ever really a big deal to begin with? i know she's had a few good tunes here and there but i never thought much of her beyond that.

Lady GaGa sold 4mil of the Fame WORLDWIDE.

Taylor's sales were mainly driven in USA...

wow, they're going cheek to cheek on sales and airplay...who'll be number 1 this week on hot 100?

The no2 song on the Hot100 airplay is not Bad Romance. it is Paparazzi.

Bad Romance is no19. No. 19 - Lady Gaga (+8.1 million)

Tpoaz, it's 151k + 174k = 325k....

That would be GaGa at #2 actually, ahead of Andre Bocelli.

Let the excuses begin.

She's a singles artist. If she's so huge, should've sold more. Sorry. Flop.

Reread my post. I was taking a measure of the sales of the new Monster tracks only. If The Fame has been selling 30K per week on average you need to estimate that it would've sold that this week again. So I deducted that amount from the Deluxe version sales. That was the 121K number.
