Very interesting sales this week, Kris Allen missed the Top 10 ( I don't think that has ever happened to the debut album of any AI winner before) and Janet just made the Top 20.

Can't wait to see next weeks sales, should be very interesting too.

John Mayer 'Battles' To Top With Second No. 1 Album

November 25, 2009

Editor: Keith Caulfield; Contributors: Wade Jessen, Gary Trust, Alex Vitoulis; Editorial Director: Silvio Pietroluongo

John Mayer brings home his second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 as "Battle Studies" bows with 286,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan . . . Mayer leads a busy chart as another eight albums debut in the top 20 from such luminaries as Norah Jones, Casting Crowns, 50 Cent, Justin Bieber, Kris Allen, Them Crooked Vultures, Leona Lewis and Paul McCartney . . . Mayer will most certainly step aside next week, as "Britain's Got Talent" winner Susan Boyle is on course to notch a historic debut atop the list with her debut album, "I Dreamed a Dream" . . . Finally, old is new again on the Billboard 200 this week, as the tally has been modified to allow catalog album releases back onto the list.

FLASH POINTS

• John Mayer snares his second No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with "Battle Studies" as the Columbia artist bows atop the tally with 286,000 copies. The singer/songwriter's first topper came with "Heavier Things" in 2003 when it bowed with 317,000. Mayer's last studio set, "Continuum," entered the chart at No. 2 with 300,000 in 2006.

• Mayer's "Battle Studies" leads a pre-Thanksgiving parade of new albums onto the list, including debuts from Norah Jones ("The Fall," No. 3 with 180,000), Casting Crowns ("Until the Whole World Hears," No. 4; 167,000) and 50 Cent ("Before I Self Destruct," No. 5 with 160,000).

• "Battle Studies" posts the third-best sales week for a digital set this year—129,000 downloads—and the best one yet for Columbia Records. Earlier in 2009, U2's "No Line on the Horizon" arrived with 155,000 downloads and Dave Matthews Band's "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King" launched with 134,000 downloads.

• "Battle Studies" is only the 12th album to sell at least 100,000 downloads in one week since SoundScan began tracking digital album sales in 2005.

• Mayer will likely relinquish the Billboard 200 throne next week, as Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream" is set to debut in the top slot. Industry sources say that the set could sell as much as 600,000 copies by week's end on Sunday night (Nov. 29). It even has a chance of netting the best sales week of the year for an album, which is currently held by the debut of Eminem's "Relapse" with 608,000.

• Jones' fourth studio set, "The Fall," follows three straight No. 1s for the singer. Her last release, "Not Too Late," debuted atop the list with 405,000 in February 2007. As for Casting Crowns, the 167,000 arrival of "Until the Whole World Hears" marks the group's best sales week. The act's previous high week came when "The Altar and the Door" debuted and peaked at No. 2 with 129,000 copies in September 2007.

• 50 Cent's "Before I Self Destruct" is the rapper's fourth top 10 set and follows the 2007 release "Curtis." The latter opened at No. 2 with 691,000 copies, stuck behind Kanye West's No. 1 debut with "Graduation" (957,000).

• Fifteen-year-old Justin Bieber arrives at No. 6 with his economically priced seven-song EP "My World," selling 137,000 copies in its first week. A couple steps down, just outside the top 10, is "American Idol" winner Kris Allen with his self-titled debut, starting at No. 11 with 80,000 copies. Rock super group Them Crooked Vultures (consisting of Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones) flies in at No. 12 with its self-titled first offering (70,000) while Leona Lewis' sophomore album, "Echo," sings out at No. 13 with 67,000. Her debut set, "Spirit," opened at No. 1 with 205,000 copies in April 2008. Paul McCartney's live set "Good Evening New York City" rounds out the debuts in the top 20 as it enters at No. 16 with 55,000. It's McCartney's eighth non-Beatles live album to chart.

• Back in the top 10 this week, Andrea Bocelli's "My Christmas" surges at No. 2 with 185,000 and a gain of 36% while Michael Jackson's "This Is It" slides from No. 4 to No. 7 with 96,000 (down 18%). The "New Moon" soundtrack moves up two rungs to No. 8 with 93,000 and a 77% gain in sales. Rounding out the holdovers in the top 10, Carrie Underwood's "Play On" drops from No. 3 to No. 9 with 86,000 (down 33%) and Taylor Swift's "Fearless" falls five spots to No. 10 with 84,000 (down 8%).

• Old is new again on the Billboard 200 this week, as a bevy of fresh (old) faces dot our newly revamped chart. The tally has been modified to allow catalog album releases back onto the list.

• In the top 20, two catalog sets return to the chart: Casting Crowns' "Peace on Earth" (No. 15 with 56,000; up 17%) and Taylor Swift's "Sounds of the Season" (No. 20 with 45,000; down less than 1%).

• Since May 25, 1991, catalog albums have had their own Billboard home: the Top Pop Catalog chart. Catalog albums are defined as those that are at least 18 months old, have fallen below No. 100 on the Billboard 200 and do not have an active single on our radio charts.

• This week, which also not coincidentally marks the first chart week of Billboard's 2010 chart year, we have made over the Billboard 200 so that older titles are brought back into the mix.

• Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Nov. 22) totaled 8 million units, up 13% compared with the sum last week (7 million) and down 16% compared with the same sales week of 2008 (9.5 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 309.5 million, down 13% compared with the same total at this point last year (357.8 million).

MARKET WATCH

• Album units, current chart week: 8 million units

• UP 13% from last week's charts: 7 million units

• DOWN 16% from same week, 2008: 9.5 million units

• This week: The top six albums on the Billboard 200 sell more than 100,000 copies.

• This week last year on the Billboard 200: Beyonce's "I Am . . . Sasha Fierce" started at No. 1 with 482,000, and Nickelback's "Dark Horse" arrived in the runner-up slot with 326,000. "American Idol" winner David Cook bowed at No. 3 with his self-titled debut shifting 280,000 while the previous week's topper, Taylor Swift's "Fearless," fell to No. 4 with 217,000 (down 63%).

A LOOK AHEAD

• Among the albums released this week, due on next week's charts: Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream," Rihanna's "Rated R," Adam Lambert's "For Your Entertainment," Lady Gaga's "The Fame" deluxe reissue as well as the stand-alone "The Fame Monster," Shakira's "She Wolf," Jay Sean's "All or Nothing" and Birdman's "Pricele$$."

• Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2008 when: Kanye West's "808s & Heartbreak" reigned as the Thanksgiving week champ, debuting at No. 1 with 450,000 copies. Taylor Swift's "Fearless" climbed from No. 4 to No. 2 with 267,000 and a 23% gain while Guns N' Roses' long-delayed "Chinese Democracy" bowed at No. 3 with 261,000. The previous week's No. 1, Beyonce's "I Am . . . Sasha Fierce," fell to No. 4 in its second week with 257,000 (down 47%). Ludacris' "Theater of the Mind" (No. 5 with 213,000) and the Killers' "Day & Age" (No. 6 with 193,000) were the remaining debuts in the top 10.

No mention of Shakira...

Probably because she won't even clear 100k.

The AI winner coming in at #11 must be alarming for the producers of the show, no?

BOYLE’S DREAM COMES TRUE

Debut Album Will Top 600k, Adam Lambert, Gaga, Rihanna, Shakira Also Bow

November 25, 2009

Not since Mrs. Miller warbled “A Lover’s Concerto” on the Ed Sullivan Show have we had as unlikely a pop heroine as Susan Boyle.

And if that dates us, go tell it on Topio Gigio the little Italian mouse.

A story which began with Simon Cowell’s arched eyebrows on Britain’s Got Talent, where she made her unlikely debut singing “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables climaxes in a chart-topping debut for the album of the same name in the middle of the busiest retail season of the year. The album set a record in the U.K. with more than 130k sales on its first day in stores. It is on track to beat the highest first-week sales of 375,872 for a debut album set by Leona Lewis two years ago.

That’s right, folks, the team of Barnett and Boyle, as in Columbia’s fearless leader Steve, will be #1 next week with a total that right now appears more than 600k and, dare we say it, could go even higher.

That’s based on one-day sales reports from delirious retailers high on Boyle’s version of “Daydream Believer.”

The controversial gender-bending Idol runner-up Adam Lambert proves to be the real people’s choice—at least those who prefer their music a cross between Freddie Mercury and Anthony Newley—with a first-week total in the 210-230k range for his 19/RCA/RMG bow, For Your Entertainment, unfortunately, not named after the retail chain.

Interscope provocateur for all seasons Lady Gaga’s Fame Monster EP, a seven-song addition to the deluxe edition available on its own, will do 180-200k, while the new version (now merged on the charts with the original album) should do another 130-150k.

Def Jam/IDJ’s Rihanna, whose new album Rated R has been getting stellar reviews in the L.A. and N.Y. Times and Rolling Stone, is on line for 180-200k.

Yet another global diva, Epic’s Shakira, will bow with 80-90k of her new She Wolf album.

A couple of Cash Money/Universal Republic acts in Jay Sean and Birdman are the other new releases, both trending in the 30-35k range.

The market was up 13% vs. last week, down 16% vs. same week last year and down 13% year to date.

Now it’s time to suck down some tryptophan, curl up on the couch in a fetal position and watch some football.

Sharika beating Leona? never would have expected that to be honest.

Leona owed most of her US success to Oprah and Simon, plus Bleeding Love was a killer single. She has none of this with the new album.

Nah, not when Glambert is clearing 200k or more. I am not a fan of his music or style but I am glad to see a talented, openly gay performer bringing in the Benjamins over that straight-laced "I won the popular vote" Kris guy. At least Adam isn't afraid to be different.

Bought a few albums when I was out shopping today and Susan Boyles album was sold out EVERYWHERE! Hopefully the label will get those albums shipped soon before people pass on the inital craze and black friday shoppers.

I picked out Adam(got to support my gays)John Mayer, and Norah. Norahs new album is incredible. Loving her song "It's Gonna To Be"

The "milk that cow before she becomes yesterday's news" it's pretty disgusting. Didn't they have confidence enough as to release it with a new name and a new album? Anyway I'm glad their move was screwed by Susan Boyle, which however, may become yesterday's news sooner than Gaga, so milk that cow too! :horn:

So it is likely there'll be a Hot 100 year end Top 1 and 2 for The Black eyed peas? "I gotta feeling" and "Boom boom pow" were the biggest hits there, right? and The END it's on its way to end up being the number 1 album released in 2009.

However, I also think Gaga could have 2 year end top 10's with "Poker Face" and "Just dance" because they had huge itunes sales, but not sure if enough as to beat The Black eyed peas.

On the other hand, what's sure is that "Poker Face" will be Number one in the Global Chart's year end top 40 and Gaga will score album of the year Globally too for the frenzy of her monsters

sick

Clive Davis got demoted because of Leona Lewis. He spent an incredible amount of time and money trying to break her in the US and the results were disappointing. So he washed his hands on her and any other AI winner and instead is focusing solely on Whitney.

Janet actually came in at 22; Whitney moved up to 62 (it was around 71 on last week's comprehensive chart), and Mimi tumbled to #95.

The projections for Adam Lambert are good, but not crazy-good, considering the hype, his popularity, etc. Especially when compared to a contestant from a British talent show. :wow:

Mariah is at #95 already!!!???

Yep, as weird as it looks!

plus Gaga has already replaced her in the American Radio's Sweetheart category so not sure what's left for her now that also album sales have abandoned her. However, she was still able to score a platinium single on Obsessed.

Think next, artists may just release singles since they are selling way much more than albums nowadays . :asian:

Whitney passed the 800k mark this week, something Memoirs will never accomplish.

If the Grammy Noms show Whitney a lot of love this album shoud easily pass the million mark and it will do it without airplay or a hit single.

^Exceopt if you're Taylor Swift, of course. :) There are acts who are still selling OK levels of albums.

Mimi's sales last week dropped 20%.

well, taylor is basically a US sweetheart ...like Miley Cyrus etc... :asian:

Whitney has done well at Urban AC radio, so it's not like she has zero aiplay- but, she has little to none at pop and rhythmic, the two formats that drive singles sales. She has done well without that radio support.

Leona didn't really do bad at all though. "Bleeding Love" was one of the biggest US singles last year and the album did move 1.5 million. In today's climate 1.5 million is a bonafide smash hit, and she's done better than anyone from Idol since Daughtry.

Well, Adam is also extremely controversial, especially after the AMA performance. Jesus Freaks and Fox News watchers wish he'd get AIDS already, so he's doing phenomenal considering he's reaching a post-out level of success that George Michael, Pet Shop Boys and many others were denied after coming out.

HITS:

THANK GOD IT'S BLACK FRIDAY

Susan Boyle Climbs Past 625k, Approaches 675k, Lambert #2, Lady Gaga Two in Top 10

November 27, 2009

Steve Barnett's Columbia Records and Susan Boyle have a lot to be thankful for this weekend. And that goes for you two, Adam Lambert and Lady Gaga.

Going into the weekend, Simon Cowell's gal Boyle is a runaway for #1 on next Tuesday's HITS Album Sales chart, with a total almost three times her closest competitor, 19/RCA/ RMG's Idol runner-up Adam Lambert.

Boyle's I Dreamed a Dream is on target for between 625-675k in sales, which would be the year's biggest debut, besting Eminem's 608k for his Relapse album.

Lambert's For Your Entertainment looks like a lock for #2 with between 210-230k.

The week's other big story is Interscope's Lady Gaga, whose seven-song Fame Monster EP will sell between 190-210k, good enough for #3, while her just-released two-disc Fame Monster deluxe edition should add another 130-150k to that album's total.

Decca's Andrea Bocelli is the lone Top 5 holdover at 180-200k, where he's running neck-and-neck with Def Jam/IDJ diva Rihanna's critically acclaimed Rated R with the same estimated total.

The rest of the chart looks a little something like this, pending weekend traffic:

Carrie Underwood (19/Arista Nashville) 100-120k

John Mayer (Columbia) 90-110k

* Shakira (Columbia) 85-100k

50 Cent (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) 85-100k

Twilight Saga: New Moon (Chop Shop/Atlantic) 85-100k

Norah Jones (Blue Note/EMI) 85-100k

Taylor Swift Fearless (Big Machine) 85-100k

Michael Jackson's This Is It (Epic) 75-90k

Casting Crowns Peace on Earth (Provident/Reunion) 75-90k

Taylor Swift Holiday Collection (Big Machine) 75-90k

*indicates debut
