Are you sure??

Yes! Billboard already broke the news!

Britney Spears becomes the first artist in over three years to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, to be released tomorrow (Oct. 15), as "3" opens at the pinnacle of the chart. Her new track, a racy paean to the joys of three-way sex from the upcoming hits set "The Singles Collection," due Nov. 24, shifts 255,000 downloads in its first week of release, also propelling it to No. 1 on Digital Songs. The title also jumps 38-25 on the Pop Songs chart and debuts at No. 49 on Radio Songs/Hot 100 Airplay, which ranks songs based on airplay audience on all radio formats.

"3" is the first title to debut at No. 1 since Taylor Hicks' "American Idol" victory song "Do I Make You Proud" did so on the chart dated July 1, 2006. In fact, the last four songs to open at No. 1 were all "American Idol"-related. Prior to Hicks, Carrie Underwood's "Inside Your Heaven" (July 2, 2005), "I Believe" by Fantasia (July 10, 2004) and Clay Aiken's "This Is The Night" each debuted at No. 1. The last non-"Idol" song to open at No. 1 was Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop (That Thing)" on Nov. 14, 1998. "3" is Spears' third Hot 100 No. 1. Her debut single "...Baby One More Time" spent two weeks at No. 1 in 1999 and "Womanizer" spent a sole frame at the top, exactly one year ago this week, on the chart dated Oct. 25, 2008.

^It did bubble under last week, but since that's not part of the Hot 100, it is debut. A nice shake up on the charts is always welcome (regardless of artistic merits). She now has 1 more #1 than Aretha Franklin- that must make her a legend, eh? :demonic: (though Paula Abdul has 6 total, and, of course, Mimi has 50 or so).

While I'm not a fan of "3" it is good to see someone who just two years ago was labelled as over having so much success.

When Britney first came out I thought she would be gone in six months but a decade later she has 5 #1 albums and 3 #1 singles to her name, not bad at all.

HITS:

WMG WILL SHOOT THE MOON OR CRACK THE BUBBLY

Crooner and Soundtrack Will Vie for #1 Next Week

October 14, 2009

One thing’s for certain. WMG will have the #1 album on next week’s HITS sales chart.

The identity of that release is what’s in doubt.

That’s because Reprise crooner Michael Buble, in his first full week in stores, will hold steady from last week’s 140k in sales, and might even see a slight uptick for his album Crazy Love. Could he be, like another WMG artist, Josh Groban, a few years back, Q4’s hidden weapon?

That little bit of wisdom comes from one-day sales reports provided by those retailers who still know where the music section of their store is.

We won’t know how well music supe superstar Alexandra Patsavas’ Chop Shop/Atlantic soundtrack The Twilight Saga: New Moon will do since it doesn’t hit until Friday (10/16), and with the movie not yet in release, there’s no telling if it can top Buble, but look for a two-horse race between heartthrob singer and vampire.

There’s nothing much to write home about among the other new releases, which include J/RMG’s Mario, Warner Bros.’ Flaming Lips and Reprise’s Dead by Sunrise, all in the 20-25k range. Next up is a pair of unlikely matched holiday albums in Jive/JLG’s David Archuleta (18-21k) and Bob Dylan (15-18k), with Columbia’s Five for Fighting also on tap (12-15k).

The market was down 9% vs. last week, down 2% vs. same week last year and now down 13% year to date.

You may now go back to stocking your fully customized KISS underground fallout shelter with leather Gene Simmons oxygen tanks and canned Paul Stanley sardines.

It's truly a nice middle finger to the radio stations who tried to "make her go away" (like they did with Spice Girls when Spiceworld came out. They went from three mega-hits to barely registering on the airplay chart in six months time, because radio stations wanted them to go away) and playing favorites with Christina.

And who said pigs don't fly???! I hope this is true and that her SS numbers were higher than HITS. Where is Mimiand how much did she sell? I believe the lambs have committed mass suicide...hence the low sales numbers.

Thanks, bigham. Mimi's album may not even make it to 500k and this album was released late in the year too! IDJ must be very nervous about the profitability of one their biggest stars...

The #22 ablum scanned 25,940, so, yeah, the SoundScan number is higher than HITS. If it scanned 27,586, that would make it an even 100K- though SS sometimes makes adjustments with figures from week to week.

I have a feeling IDJ will be adding a remix disc to the Memoirs album and re-releasing it in early December.

I don't think it is going to make a big difference. I suppose it might get her across the gold threshhold.

celebration is dead, bring on Live Nation album #1 and a smashing hit

I think it's not yet dead, it needs resuscitation from Madonna only.

Random trivia question, not relevant to this week but in general.

If Madonna ever does score another #1 single in the 2010s, that would mean a #1 in four consecutive decades. Has anyone else done that?

Janet is the only other current artist who would have a shot at that, I think... (she probably actually has a better chance than Madonna). Mariah's first #1 was in 1990.

Michael Jackson still has a few weeks left in the 00s to get a #1 this decade for 4 in a row. With "This Is It" not being available as a single, however, I think that possibility just evaporated.

Am I forgetting another artist who falls in this realm? Maybe someone who had 50s/60s/70s/80s hits? Frank Sinatra?

I do remember JANET and MADONNA being regarded one after another when Doesn't Really Matter and Music went back-to-back #1s in 2000 for having #1s in 3 consecutive decades... and I don't remember other artists being mentioned achieving that feat...

Yeah, I do think Janet and Madonna are the only artists who had a #1 in 80s, 90s and 00s. I think Cher is the only artist ever to get a #1 single in 4 consecutive decades but in her case it's the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

There are probably pre-80s artists who had hits in more decades but none of them hit the top in 00s...

I don't think Janet actually has more chance for a #1, it can only happen if she gets a mass-media re-evaluation. But I don't think either hers, either Madonna's label will be aiming to get a #1 in the 10s...

EDIT: I checked Wiki and it doesn't seem Cher had a #1 single in the 80s? I did read her supposed record mentioned on forums these days, but it seems she did not have a #1 between 1974 and 1998?

Cher had the dreadful, "If I could turn back time" in the 80s, "Believe" in the 90s. Isn't she the artist with only four number ones, ironically, one a decade? Seems that nothing struck for her in the 00s.

If I Could Turn Back Time peaked at 3 in the USA.

Really?

Cliff Richard has an impressive UK record - 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s

He ALMOST got a #1 into the 2000s with The Millennium Song till those cunts Westlife stopped him
