Barbra Streisand Surprises With Ninth No. 1 On Billboard 200

by Keith Caulfield, L.A. and Monica Herrera, N.Y. | oktober 07, 2009 10:32 EDT

http://www.billboard.com/#/news/barbra-streisand-surprises-with-ninth-no-1004019217.story

While many were focused on a battle between Paramore's "Brand New Eyes" and Mariah Carey's "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" for the top slot on the Billboard 200 this week, Barbra Streisand trumps them both. "Love Is the Answer" earns Streisand her ninth No. 1 on the chart, opening with 180,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The debut extends Streisand's lead as the female act with the most No. 1s in the history of the Billboard 200. It's also the her best sales week and highest charting album since 1997, when "Higher Ground" started at No. 1 with 207,000.

"Answer" beats the arrivals of Paramore's "Brand New Eyes," which enters at No. 2 with 175,000, and Mariah Carey's "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," arriving at No. 3 with 168,000. First-week sales projections had estimated that Paramore would finish ahead of the two divas. As it turns out, Streisand surprised many with how well her album sold in non-traditional ways -- such as through Starbucks, QVC and via her Web site -- and that likely threw a wrench into forecasting sales.

"Brand New Eyes" gives Paramore its best sales week and highest charting album ever. The band's sophomore album, "Riot!," peaked at No. 15 in 2007. "Eyes" also starts at No. 1 on the Top Digital Albums tally with a whopping 73,000 downloads.

Carey's "Memoirs" begins its Billboard 200 life with 168,000 -- off quite a bit from the opening of her last set, 2008's "E=MC2." The latter effort bowed at No. 1 with 463,000, her biggest first-week sum ever.

Those titles are just three of the record-breaking eight entries in the top 10. Rock band Breaking Benjamin's "Dear Agony" arrives at No. 4 with the act's best sales week -- 134,000. It's the Hollywood Records band's first release since 2006's "Phobia" debuted and peaked at No. 2 with 125,000.

Alice in Chains visits the top 10 for the first time since 1996 as its new album, "Black Gives Way to Blue," bows at No. 5 with 126,000. The album is the band's first with new vocalist William DuVall, who replaced the band's late frontman Layne Staley in 2006.

Madonna's new greatest hits set, "Celebration," starts the party at No. 7 this week with 72,000. Rounding out the top 10 entries are Miranda Lambert's third album, "Revolution" (No. 8 with 66,000) and Selena Gomez and the Scene's "Kiss and Tell," which debuts just a little behind Lambert's sum at No. 9 with 66,000. Only two albums in this week's top 10 also appeared on last week's chart: Pearl Jam's "Backspacer" falls from No. 1 to No. 10 with 58,000 (down 69%) while Jay-Z's "The Blueprint 3" drops from No. 2 to No. 6 with 89,000 (down 34%).

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Oct. 4) totaled 6.87 million units, up 16% compared to the sum last week (5.93 million) and down 8% compared to the same sales week of 2008 (7.50 million). Year to date album sales stand at 263.4 million, down 14% compared to the same total at this point last year (305.3 million).

Mimi should learn from Barbra i.e. sell her next album through KFC.

After exactly half a year, BEP relinquishes the top spot.

http://www.billboard.com/#/news/jay-sean-sends-peas-packing-from-hot-100-1004020213.story

Jay Sean will put an end to the Black Eyed Peas' record reign atop the Billboard Hot 100 as his "Down" will move into the top slot on the chart to be released tomorrow morning. The Peas had held steady at No. 1 for 26 straight weeks with "Boom Boom Pow" (12 weeks) and "I Gotta Feeling (14 weeks), smashing the prior mark of 19 straight No. 1 frames earned by Usher with a pair of his tracks in 2004.

For Sean, his debut single becomes his first Hot 100 No. 1. The track also climbs to the top of Hot 100 Airplay with a total of 115 million listener impressions and rises 5-3 on Hot Digital Songs, where is has moved 1.5 million downloads since its release.

Is this the first British #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 since Bleeding Love?

Erotica opened with 167K (in SoundScan's relative infancy, and on its way to 1.88 million) and Bedtime Stories opened with 145K (on its way to 2.3 million).

Great for Babs- still a commercial force.

Considering how greatest hits albums have performed in recent times, Celebration did alright.

KISS' SONIC GOES BOOM!!

KISS' Wal-Mart Exclusive Looks Headed for Top Spot Next Week

October 7, 2009

Gene Simmons has done it again. His Wal-Mart exclusive for the band's new Sonic Boom album, its first new studio effort in 11 years, is headed for between 150-175k in sales, giving the masked rockers a beeline on their first chart-topping release ever.

That's based on reports from those retailers out there who haven't packed up and moved to Boca Raton or begun to write a tell-all biography.

Showdog Nashville's Toby Keith album American Ride is the next highest at 80-90k, though Reprise crooner Michael Buble's Crazy Love, which comes out this Friday (10/9) to coincide with the singer's Oprah appearance, could also be in the mix.

Capitol Nashville's Luke Bryan is next with 40-45k, along with Jive/JLG's Relient K and Backstreet Boys.

Malaco's veteran gospel act BeBe & CeCe Winans appear headed for the 30-35k range, followed by Columbia's Brandi Carlile (25-30k), Cherrytree/Interscope's Tokio Hotel (18-22k) and Atlantic's Mayday Parade (18-22k).

The market was up 16% vs. last week, down 8% vs. same week last year and still down 14% year to date.

Poor Mimi. She didn't get a top 5 single for Obesed and she couldn't even reach the top 2 with Memoirs of an overly bloated angel.

The lambs must be complete meltdown by now. Janet will be laughing her head off if Mimi's album sells than Discipline! LOL

Janet is bigger internationally so yes, Janet will have the last laugh at Mariah.

Actually, Mimi is bigger internationally, which is why Janet will have the last laugh when MOAIA doesn't end up selling as much as Discipline.

Way to go Jean Sean! A British act at no1 in the USA! How did he manage to crack the USA market? Most of his songs are very mid-chart in the UK.

HAHAHHAAH at MC but it will probably outsell Discipline. I wonder to what extent she will go to make this a hit album? Hardy Candy pissed all over it!

Out of curiosity is this one of the BEST SELLING NO3 debuts in 2009?

Im not overall impressed by 72,000 but as they say GH's dont sell very well and the market is low, but surely not that low?

I'd love to know the Soundscan numbers for all Mariah's albums, cause she's been very overcertified hasn't she?

oh, she most certainly is!

I'd love to know how she's gonna pull off a platinum certification for her new album. It'll be lucky to scan 500k at the rate it's going.

Billboard Hot 100 #1s by British acts this decade:

You're Beautiful - James Blunt

Bleeding Love - Leona Lewis

Viva La Vida - Coldplay

Down - Jay Sean feat. Lil Wayne

A very poor showing. The last ten years has seen the worst British presence on Billboard since the charts began. Safe to say the 00s was the most musically insular decade to date in the US.

Madonna's album did alright. The price point is higher for both of her albums and most people bought the double disc, so consider that as well.

Mariah on the other hand surprisingly not so well especially considering the huge TV push for her album. She was interviewed and performed on Oprah, The View, Good morning American and had those two concerts in Vegas just to name a few things and that isn't all. Poor showing considering. Personally I like the album but I don't forsee any of the songs on it becoming a huge single and saving it. If word of mouth doesn't sell it, nothing will.

Well, I'll look forward to Revolver being a Billboard Hot 100 #1 then...

Jay Sean is a budding artist (so the interest is there), he is not 51 years old and have a decent amount of looks, he is a true R&B artist (R&B being the key word there)...
