LONDON (AFP) – Madonna secured her 11th number one album in Britain on Sunday when her greatest hits collection "Celebration" shot to the top of the charts -- equalling Elvis Presley's record.

The pop diva's collection of 36 hits spanning her lengthy career knocked Muse's "The Resistance" from the number one position in its debut week, the Official UK Charts Company said.

The singer has now matched Elvis Presley's record of 11 number one albums for a solo artist in Britain, and is four behind The Beatles who hold the all-time record of 15 top-selling albums, according to the company, which compiles the weekly rundown.

Madonna also becomes the most successful female solo artist of all time in Britain with the most weeks at the top of the album charts -- 29 -- the most number one singles -- 13 -- and the most chart doubles for topping the singles and album charts simultaneously - four, the company said.

The top of the singles chart remains the same, with singer songwriter Taio Cruz holding on to the number one spot for a second week with "Break Your Heart."

this is the girl i have followed LOYALLY since 1983. i never veered off, i never doubted, i never abandoned. even in the low periods, never went to whoever was popular at the moment - those nobody nothings. im so happy my girl has pulled through this many years with everyone saying shes shyt.

Number 1 is good but as American Life and Hard Candy proved, it means NOTHING in terms of sales - the real test for Celebration is whether it can SUSTAIN its sales or PLUMMET like the aforementioned.

First week sales for other albums:

217.000 COADF 2005 1

152.000 Music 2000 1

95.000 Hard Candy 2008 1

88.000 GHV2 2001 2

77.000 Celebration 2009 1

65.000 American Life 2003 1

In fact Music and COADF did more than Celebration's first week sales, in week 2.

Which is pretty meaningless because the biggest opening so far this year has been 166,000 for the Eminem album that was hugely hyped. If M does do X Factor as rumoured, and with Christmas approaching, 'Celebration''s biggest one-week sales are still to come. But I guess because they wouldn't be as high as 200,000 you'd call that a 'flop'.

Promotion will be the KEY to its success.

TIC was number 1 for 9 weeks, it was the biggest selling album of 1990 and the seventh biggest selling album of 1991.

And she is still alive and with a carreer going strong.

Elvis got 11 #01 albums including some #01's achieved years after his death.

The same happened to the Beatles.

She is the best!

Greatest Hits compilations don't achieve the same 1st week sales as new material. In times when people obtain music for free and don't buy their music this is a great achievement.

This will probably be in the christmas stockings of many people and as such will see a continuous sale until after Christmas... it will do well. Casual fans won't but it for celebration / revolver, but will buy it for the remastered songs on it. Let's put aside the factual inaccuracies and some of the less than perfect tracks most people won't even know who wrote what song / produced, or, whether a popping is supposed to be there or not.

THis won't outsell TIC but may take a similar share of the market... that's more telling than volume. Now stop being silly and celebrate an achievement... it still got No1.

.... and she toppled the king in 10 moves less than she said she would! :boxing:
