The SECRET video is one of her TOP 5 EVER. It's so sexy.

Secret is beautiful and the cast of extras are amazing (especially Kevin Aviance and THAT model with the abs - how do you get those?). The Dan O'Rama video's great because you get to see more of the extras. I'd love if Melodie McDaniel had made a movie in Harlem that looked like that, even if it was shit I'd watch it just for the visuals.

And of course the walk :vanitybonet: .

funkydita, i love your avatar and sig -- the photo in your sig has always been one of my favorites. And "Love Tried to Welcome Me" is among my favorite Madonna songs -- well, at least among my melancholy Madonna favorites! So sad!

Thanks! It's my first ever avatar / sig!

It's a great shoot isn't it? It perfectly reflects the older, depressed, washed out hooker image people had of her at the time, there's a knowingness to it.

Love Tried To Welcome Me / Forbidden Love and Sanctuary are great, there's a sense of melancholy underlying much of her work that's often overlooked (as much as the humour, or irony as she'd like to say, that's often evident). I get the feeling that she wasn't in a great place during this period, there's a sadness, angriness and a bare vulnerability evident in her work and interviews (some of which are the most honest she's done), that we've not seen since.

I agree that the whole era had this stripped down, being-so-honest feel. But it was probably the logical step to do, after the over the top act of Erotica/Dita. The BS look was also her least distinctive album-look up to that time.

I think the lyrics are definitely overlooked, there are many personal and mature stuff on it, I'd say a lot more than Erotica (except "Secret Garden"), which is more often lauded as some lyrical/honest masterpiece among fans.

As for the tour, I really wished there was one, but she was more interested in her movie career back then. :dramatic: Still can't believe she only performed 2 songs live from this album on tour in 15 years!

I love this album.

It's a nice little chill out album to put on at night. It really isn't your typical Madonna album, it's missing the thumping dance anthems she is famous for (sorry but Don't Stop doesn't qualify )

But what we got instead was a beautiful, heartfelt and personal album. Silky and romantic throughout.

On the surface it seemed like a safe album in response to all the backlash. But there was the song Human Nature lyrically giving a very clear message on her feelings about it all. There were more experimental songs like Sanctuary and Bedtime Story.

The artwork and general feel of the album may have indicated Madonna was mellowing abit. But to the contrary we had a lesbian encounter in the Secret video, alleged animal cruelty and Madonna in her underwear in Take A Bow. Not to mention the S&M flavoured video for Human Nature. Compared to Erotica it was more laid back and romantic. It's just a really beautiful honest record, and perhaps not her best as there's a number of filler tracks. But I do love it as a whole. Some of her best vocal work too, so gentle and tender sounding.

I agree. I think this was when Madonna really became interested in "finding herself" and lyrically it's very much a prelude to having a baby and the themes of Ray Of Light. It seems the backlash era had a profound effect. Prior to that she had become so power and fame hungry that she pushed it to the limit and went as far as she could go and get away with. This album to me is reflection of her taking a step back at her career/life and looking inward again the same way she did with Like A Prayer. From memory I believe this was the time when she started to become interested in kabbalah and all the soul searching that went with that.

As for touring, I didn't notice until you mentioned it that she's only done 2 songs from this album on tour! In all honesty, even though it was planned I cannot really imagine a tour from this album. It just didn't seem epic enough. But then again, she *did* tour Hard Candy and that had a comparable level of success so who knows.

But to the contrary we had a lesbian encounter in the Secret video.

I don't really think of that as being a lesbian encounter, I see it as something more maternal and spiritual. There was an article, somewhere, at the time that reckoned Secret alluded to heroin use and that scene was her detoxing (but I don't really read that from it). I also recall an interview (can't remember if it was Spin, Details or The Face) that mentioned some spiritual or psychic maternal figure M had in her life at that point (some old woman in Miami??), I think it somehow relates to this. I need to dig out those magazines to check that reference.

I think you're absolutely right about how deeply she was affected by the backlash, there's an almost palpable mix of bitterness, anger, sadness and vulnerability in her work and interviews that we'd not seen before nor since.

It's also (ever so mildly) interesting that she got pet dogs during this period, I never had her down as being a dog lover. Maybe she was lonely and yearning for those 3 kids she always said she'd wanted.

Wait, which do you mean? The original print shows her upside-down (which is actually right side up from the camera's POV, as she was laying down on the bed).

Or do you mean that this one (which is actually printed upside-down) shows her right side up?

To set the mood for those who missed it the first time around (or for those who want to relive it) here are submissions to a Madonna mailing list from September of 1994... I love scanning through these!

BEDROOM STORIES featuring SECRETS. :rotfl:

PART ONE

From: dmh2 (at) cornell.edu (David M. Herring)

Subject: Re: Madonna's New Album

On September 1st, Mr Galifi, of Monmouth College, wrote that "Madonna's new

album could be coming out in October" according to Billboard Magazine. My

inside sources cite late October or early November as a possible release

date. They were unsure though. Apparently because of the crew that she's

working with, there are some time delays. Mr Galifif also feels that the

album is certainly "going to be R&B influenced..." This is apparently

true as I have some friends at Maverick who have attested to this. They

say (off the record of course) that it's "good R&B stuff...if you like

Erotica, you shouldn't go out and buy this one however." I haven't even

heard the name of the album yet though. My friends in the biz won't tell

me! Anyone else know??

Yes, the new album will be call "Bedroom Stories" plus it well be pop/R&B

influence and it's songs has to do with romance (whatever that means to

Madonna). By the way folks, Babyface was one of the produce I always wanted m

to work with so this album is like a dream come true

Hi,

I heard some more info about M's new album today on MTV including:

1. There is a track written by Bjork.

2. Producers of the album include Dallas Austin, Nellie Hooper? from Soul II

Soul and as we all know, Babyface.

3. The album was described as romantic pop with an R & B edge.

Also, I've caught Madonna many times on mTV in the last few days, mainly because

of her many mtv video music awards performances. I caught her 1984 performance

of l.a.v. and vogue today alone...and I didn't even have the tv on very much.

Let's hope this means ample play time for her new music this fall. Also,

wouldn't it be incredible if M showwed up unannounced to the awards and

performed her new song, blowing the roof off of the entire place. Just a dream of

mine but it would be very cool!

Later,

Hey all!

1- I hope to God that Shep Pettibone has nothing to do with Madonna's

upcoming album. Why? Well, because I'm bored with is producing ability!

The guy just don't know how to come up with new stuff since that good

song "This Use To Be My Playground". If Madonna wants to go R&B (which is a

good move since R&B dominates the charts nowadays), Babyface is the produce

to help her with that. The guy is magnificent. Just look at his recent

works. He produce the #1 song (I'll Make Love To You, which always put me in

the mood) on the singles chart plus he have a song on the same chart that he

produce and sings at #7!

2-Words of advice, enough with her Letterman appearances already!! There are

more important stuff to talk about now, such as her upcoming book, album and

single, so cut the Letterman crap, damn it!!

3- I agree with the person who said M should have issued a remix of

"Thief Of Herats". It would have been a #1 smash for sure! Someone

really fuck up here!

4- From what I can figure, M's new album is call "Bedtime Stories" (to be issue

in Late October) and the first single off the album is call "Secrets" (which

will be release in late September).

Figured I might as well throw my hat in the ring which I'm only assuming

everyone else's is already in. I always watch the MTV VMAs (it's a thing with

me), & boy-was-I-thrilled-&-surprised when the announcer at the beginning

said "Madonna" amongst "appearing." She looked pretty good -- workin' that

'20s flapper thang, I thought. But honey, let's tawk about that 'do! Anyway,

bringing her out with Letterman was a stroke of sheer genius, not to mention

only natural in hindsight (I mean, they *were* in NYC). Even her repartee

with Aerosmith, who I found extremely vulgar and lewd this evening, was (of

course) witty & very on-the-ball. Overall, I was pretty disappointed by the

VMAs (no wins for Me'shell or Bjork, too much old white rawk -- but Roseanne

was great), but I'm certainly glad I stayed up for all of 'em. And I'm also

rather glad I have M's appearance on tape. Woo woo!

p.s. During the "Opening Act," Tabitha Soren asked Bjork what the deal was

with her having a song on _Bedtime Stories_ (which Tab didn't name, 'cept as

the new M record). Accordingly to Bjork, Madonna asked "a friend" of Bjork to

write a song for the album, and he asked Bjork to help him. She said, "no

offense" to M, that she did it basically as a favor for her "friend." Any

ideas as to this "friend"'s identity, anyone? And either way, I'm sure the

song will be great; Bjork's just brilliant.

I think Bjork's "friend" has to be Nellee Hooper. That will be so bizarre

hearing a song she wrote sung by Madonna, and even more bizarre if Madonna

did Bjork-style vocals (I somehow doubt it).

And wasn't that the coolest in the post-awards show? Finally, some straight-

Did you hear that crowd screaming for her???They had to artifically mute it

to let you hear her when she first starts speaking.

The Letterman thing was great. You know he'll be talking about this for months.

An editor of the Village Voice on World News Now said later that he thinks this

put Madonna back on "top" again and it was the appearance that she was needing

to "salvage" her image....shit, we know she never went anywhere! And now the

You have got to be kidding me. Erotica lacking in Erotic tone? I think we

have very different views on what is erotic. I find nothing Babyface has done

to be nearly as erotic, or as funky as this album. You're right about his

stuff being romantic, but personally I hate that shit. To me, it's dime a

dozen, watered down R&B schlock. And I don't think that because a song is a

mega-hit, (ie. End of the Road/Breathe Again) that it is also a respectable

work of art. I respect Erotica as a work of art.

I also hope you'll notice that I present these views as personal opinion, not

as statements (as in your post - "This guy is by far one of the best (if not

the best) producers around of romantic R&B/pop songs and yes he is more

talented than Shep Pettibone could ever be.") When people make blanket

statements like this, I find it difficult to keep cool as you suggest.

Aren't there any other M fans out there that are dreading this collaboration?

Where are all the Erotica fans?

Well, Madonna did show up and she looked pretty damn good. Her coming out with Dave was really smart and was also a perfect bookend to Michael and Lisa Marie.

I don't know how many of you caught the post show stuff but that was the most

interesting to me. First of all, Allison was interviewing Michael Stipe

when M went to her limo. Michael shouted "Night, Maddy!" to her. It sounds lik...like it was a great moment, they didn't actually show it but Allison told

the whole story. Then, they cut to a short interview with M that was filmed

during the awards. It was 2-3 minutes long. Maddy talked about the new album,

her earlier tour with the beastie boys, how cute she thought green day was and

some other assorted stuff. While she was being interviewed, two girls stood

behind her waiting for her. One of them was the director of her new video (I

forgot her name but I have it on tape if any of you really want to know) and

the other girl's name was Fantima and she's supposedly doing some of the artwork on the album. According to the interviewer (the same one from the girlie show

pre-interview from HBO), the video for "secret" is going to be filmed this

weekend so I guess that means M will be sporting her new blonde 'do. That's

all I remember from tonight but it was a fairly decent award show, all in all.

There might be some more from M's interview on the week in rock this weekend. Ithink I'll be able to watch it so I'll tell you all if you missed anything or

not.

Later,

Will Secret Make it to #1?

I have not heard Madonna's new single yet (this waiting is a fucking pain)

but i know this, "Secret" will be competing for the #1 spot with Boyz II Man

"I'll Make Love To You" (which now occupy that position and it's not showing

any sign of moving anytime soon), and Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey

remark of the classic Lionel Richie and Diana Ross song "Endless Love" (with

Mariah apart of this song it might become a "I'll Always Love You" form of

mega hit! Of course Secret have a chance of becoming Madonna's next #1 hit

You haven't even heard hers yet! M's could rock the chart so bad, that even

I have heard that the upcoming release "Secret" has lyrics influenced by

Hindu beliefs. Does anyone know anything about this? I am anticipating a

song with a South Asian "bungra"-like (sp?) beat and a video of a similar

theme. Madonna's nose ring would fit in well with a South Asian theme.

In some ways, I hope Madonna's new album is more creative than the

majority of stuff hitting the top of the singles chart today. As

evidenced by the chart peaks of a number of excellent Madonna singles,

such as "Rain" and "Oh Father," pop audiences often have no taste. On the

other hand, it is nice to see her receive recognition for good work.

Has the release date of the single been confirmed? I have heard

Hello all, on the way to school today I was listening to a NY radio station

called Z100 and I heard a caller talking about Madonna. He said he had a

brush with greatness. He went to the video music awards and he also found

out where she was filming her new video. He went to the sight and apparentally

there was a big turn out for this. Well, to make a long story short, he said

Madonna was really nasty and cranky. He told Z100 that he was a big fan of M's

, but since she treated her fans so horribly, He took down his autographed foto

of her from his wall.

Now this is his story. I think, if this is true, that she might have

been a little annoyed that their were 100's of people at a private video shoot.

And even if she was nasty, oh well, what are you going to do?? Can't someone

have a bad day once and awhile?? He also said that she looked exactly like

the way she was at the VMA's. So that might be a hint of whats to come.

I hope that it is not the same look of the VMA's because she already did

that look and it's not her best. My favorite look is LAP because she looked

so innocent but extremely sexy.

Any way, Patty Steel, a Z100 dj, said that she was at the VMA's with her

hubby and by accident, he elbowed Madonna in the shoulder. She said that M

turned around and gave them the dirtiest look in the world. I say good for

Madonna because he did not even appologize.

Well, that is it for now, Keep requesting Secret and talk to you later

If the song comes out tomorrow, would someone on Aol or compuserve be able to

make an .au file of it? If they can, I can store it on the Madonna WWW

homepage.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, don't worry :-)

Madonnenites:

I just sent a message to postmaster (at) aol.com asking for the "Secret" Madonna

clip to be made available on the world wide web. I know they want you to pay

for the time you're logged on but it couldn't hurt to ask, right???

I'll let you all know as soon as I get a reply. Anyone willing to put the 30

second audio on their answering machine for the rest of us to listen????? :rotfl:

I don't think AOL has the technical ability to put anything on WWW, even

if they wanted to. (Remember, you can't telnet of ftp out of AOL. That's

not because they don't want to allow it, but because they don't have the

needed hardware or software.) However, I think there's a very good chance

the clip will appear at the site mentioned eariler:

http://www.iuma.com/Warner

I checked out this site, and they have a number of similar clips (e.g.

Prince, Neil Young, Laurie Anderson).

i always liked the original print.

Anyways, i remember reading somewhere about the Bedtime Story video, that a sunflower symbolizes pregnancy or wanting children, something along that nature, and not only is a sunflower present in the Bedtime Story video, but it can also be seen in the Secret video.

I get the feeling that she wasn't in a great place during this period, there's a sadness, angriness and a bare vulnerability evident in her work and interviews (some of which are the most honest she's done), that we've not seen since.

its fantastic!!!!

I agree it's hard to imagine a show dedicated to BS, but I think AL would be a better comparison. On BS several songs would need to be the "ballad performance" while several of AL would have to be sitting down with the guitar, she didn't even perform the likes of "Easy Ride" on tour because it would have been too much of the same.

Since GS was Erotica-heavy, she might have wanted to do more hits on BS tour, which means most of the ballads would have been cut anyway... Ironically, Madonna could not play the guitar back then, but it was when the "MTV Unplugged" suggestions started, so I can imagine a segment similar to the RIT, just Madonna sitting there and doing a couple of ballads.

I hope to God that Shep Pettibone has nothing to do with Madonna's

upcoming album. Why? Well, because I'm bored with is producing ability!

The guy just don't know how to come up with new stuff since that good

song "This Use To Be My Playground".

Substitute Shep & TUTBMP with Mirwais & Music and you get a Madonna board conversation! :rotfl:

I also love to read that mailing list, a lot of stuff in it proves that the complaints were present 15 years ago already and unlike what many believe, her pre-AL/HC stuff wasn't universally loved either.

Matress THANK YOU, great reading indeed!!

You should make a post like that for the others albums!

Anyway, I want the MTV 94 interview and I actually want to watch again her moment on the show, but I can't find the video anymore :-/

This album has always been one of my top3 most listen Madonna studio album.

A totally different sound that earned her 1st Grammy Best pop vocal album nomination.

My fav tracks:

1. Take A Bow (I love the string arrangement!)

2. Sanctuary (Feels like you're laying down on the grass on top of a mountain at night... the darkness, so romantic and yet so chilling. )

3. Love Tried To Welcome Me (Beautiful song with lyrics full of sorrows. How heartbreaking.)

4. Secret (Acid Jazz! A wonderful surprise I would say. The beat is so irresistible.)

5. Forbidden Love (Beautiful song. I love Babyface backing vocal.)

^ Should have been for "Love Tried to Welcome Me." I don't know why she left that one off of Something to Remember, but it would have a better inclusion than "Forbidden Love" and a better 'late' single than the '96 release of "Love Don't Live Here Anymore."

She wanted to release "Forbidden Love" as a single from STR.I actually remember the official italian fanzine saying that the single was confirmed by Warner Italy, but insted of FL they released "One More Chance" in the end.

I guess she just wanted to follow "Take A Bow" with a similar vibe single.
