HC did not benefit from a strong/big lead single. Even Music and ROL sales were not immediate. COADF must have been the only album where Madonna sold the most just because of a strong lead single and sold very little later. Sorry did nt push COADF back in the top10 but I think that weak there were big increases for Brits winners - of which Madonna was a part of course.

Come to think of it LAP was not immediate too - it was in the top 50 or top 75 best sellers of 1990 too.

Yes, but Fever's sales were gradual, not immediate the way Madonna's are on the back of a strong lead single, same with ABBA.

2008 Album Sales

The Script - The Script 544.028

Adele - 19 479.328

Neil Diamond - Home Before Dark 921.607

Madonna - Hard Candy 323.113

Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy 293.420

Dido - Safe From From Harm 192.355

Leon Jackson - Leon Jackson 122.030

Same Difference - Pop 105.927

Rhydian - Rhydian 350.785

What a difference the release date makes ... look at Rhydian!

Try to tell that to Dido though. :chuckle:

So "Give It 2 Me" only sold 30k less than "Sorry"? The sales climate really changed when a #7 single can sell nearly the same as a #1 from a couple of years ago.

Zavvi closes 19 stores

Music, games and DVD company Zavvi has decided to close another 19 stores, including its outlet at Blanchardstown, Dublin and the main high-street shop in Castlecourt, Belfast.

The closures which were ordered by the group’s administrators Ernst & Young will result in 366 job losses.

Included in the closures today is the group's flagship store in London’s Piccadilly which employs 110 people. The administrators closed 22 stores and cut 178 jobs on January 8th.

Ernst & Young - appointed as administrator on December 24th, said the remaining 73 stores throughout the UK with a view to selling all or part of the Zavvi business as a going concern.

Last week the #1 physical single sold 2K copies. With Zavvi closing, the death of the physical is all but sealed :(

I read something last week about the chart that runs on the other radio stations is no longer including physical sales. As long as physical singles continue then I'm all for them being included in the OCC's chart but they do seem to be the most FUTILE format at this stage. I'm also thinking that the days of multiple singles from albums are over, with any more than two being a rarity.

Agree as we are seeing album tracks beginning to chart immediately once the album is released to itunes etc. e.g. Britney and lady gaga. It is going to be hard for record companies to hold back songs when they are so easily obtainable.

Ultimate FLOP was in the BARGIN BINS for £5 for months.

Hardly, it was always around £7 or more until very recently. And most catalogue albums are £5 almost straight away. I love how the haters apply general market factors to Kylie. Of course, no one else sell their albums cheaply.

Sparro has overtaken 4 Mins in overall sales incl 2009, but in 2008 4 Mins was ahead.

Radio 1 is where the official top 40 is counted down each week. This is the same chart that Music Week will use and its the official chart.

Radio 1 best selling singles of the year is always counted down on new years eve and im guessing this will be the same chart Music Week will use.

Well obviously Radio 1 use the official chart, but their year end list was on December 31 and didn't quite have the final sales tally. I remember years ago when I followed the charts, that Music Week would publish the actual final year end charts at the start of January. Speaking of which, I have them here.

Yes, downloads have really taken off now, though Sorry will be adding regular download sales because of its general public popularity. Whilst not her biggest number 1, it was still a big hit (released when downloads hadn't taken off and physical sales were declining) and so will pass 200,000 and beyond in the future. HU will pass 600,000 soon too.

Anyhow, back to this weeks midweeks and there is a strong chance Girls Aloud will miss the top ten. They are at number 10 with the Loving Kind with the physical release too but their downloads are pretty low.

Is their run of top tens about to end? :chuckle:

^I love how every other week a certain "string of top 10s/20s/40s" comes to an end lately yet people only called Madonna's as a flop.

GA holding at 10 in today's update but Kayne West closing in from 11, as download only. Hope they don't make it as it makes me retch when Cheryl highlights how GA have had 19 consecutive top tens. Time is running out love.

^Re Danny post. Well MA was certainly a major flop as it limped in at 38 and did nothing for an already underperforming album. As much as GA are irritating, their latest album has done brilliantly in the UK so it makes sense that their follow up single will do less well (why download a track when you have the album) plus physical sales are next to nothing. So not really a flop single, just a moderate hit.

I'm not debating that it was a flop, just that nowadays it's so easy for anyone to score a flop or something underperforming. HC had no promo and "Miles Away" was released way too late and didn't get a video, so it just couldn't compete with newer songs. But unless you're Duffy, Leona or Take That, you can't have an immaculate chart run anymore. Dido's single didn't even break the top 40, Sugababes second single missed top 10 (and both albums did badly), Oasis didn't even reach double platinum yet their second single broke their top 10 singles run, Coldplay's latest single didn't get into top 40, McFly & Boyzone string of hits ended, and so on. Even Duffy & Leona cheated because their later singles were released from a re-release, Duffy's 3rd missed the top 20 and Leona didn't even have a proper 3rd single.

I'm not saying all that is an excuse of the "Miles Away" fuck-up but considering the circumstances, Madonna did well with the Hard Candy project and the era when an established act can place 3-5 singles from the same album in the top 10 is long gone and it shouldn't be a measure of success or relevance anymore.

Yes, very easy for an established act to miss the top ten singles now that physical sales are a minor contribution. GA are or will be another addition to the list of casualities. I suppose, further to your earlier post, the reason people don't post about these other artist flops is that they only feel passionate about Madonna and so use the forum to post their thoughts.

Fingers crossed Westshite are next to the list. They only seem to release 1 or 2 single per album though but this tactic should backfire soon enough.

^Yes but I was also thinking about those articles the online media (i.e. DigitalSpy) had about "Madonna scores her biggest flop since 1984" and such which were so one-sided.

I'm sure Westlife is the next in line, they will probably fare like McFly.

Danny86 it is not one sided. Madonna did not have her biggest flop since 1984. She had her biggest flop ever. 1984 she was a newcomer, she was not well known. For 24 years she did not peak lower than 16 and then suddenly a 39 peak? Not surprising really she did not promote it. She could have promoted it and raised interest in the song which believe me would have got some attention becaus eof the lyrics and divorce issue.

if M A missed the top 10 i dont think anyone would have minded but barely scrape the top 40 and that too after 2 hits off the album.....thats a major flop....

On the UP side...GA may have their top 10 run broken ....I HOPE THEY MISS THE TOP 10!

I cant wait for Weestlife to flop too.....its 10 years too late!

^OK I'm sorry but you're repeating yourself way too many times and refuse to accept facts.

It's simply nonsense to believe songs like "One More Chance", "Another Suitcase In Another Hall" or "Love Profusion" were any bigger than "Miles Away" and would have made it into the top 20 if the chart had worked the same way back then as it is now. It's not like she promoted ANY of those songs either. In fact, the majority of Madonna's singles were only promoted by a video. It makes no sense to compare peaks of 1995 with 2008.

It's very common *now* that after 2 hits a 3rd or a 4th single would do badly, I even pointed out some red-hot acts of 2008 didn't even take an attempt to check if their later singles could do well, they chose to do a re-release instead, with new songs that previously were *not* available as a download!

So yes, it could have peaked higher if she promoted it or she at least made a video for it, but she didn't, so it was a flop, but the concept of "only getting hits from a Platinum certified album" is over and Madonna is not invincible to the changes of the charts and that has nothing to do with the supposed quality of her current music! Like the "physicals make a single peak high for at least a week" is gone now when the #1 physical single sells 2,000 copies, that doesn't even mess up the chart based on iTunes popularity.

Oh and "Miles Away" could have been successful on the back of the divorce is just as a weird fan/press wish as Kylie having a hit single because of cancer. The general public does not buy songs based on things like that. And yes, the single itself was pointless, blame that on an irrelevant record label, but it doesn't mean the "UK hates her" or "the song is crap".
