Could anyone re-post the top 5 highest grossing tours of all time and their respective totals?

last December 2008

Madonna's Sticky & Sweet 08 tour become the sixth largest grossing tour of all time following:-

1. Rolling Stones' (558 million USD) for the 2005-7 Bigger Bang tour with 144 shows.

2. U2's (389 million USD) for the 2005-6 Vertigo tour with 133 concerts.

3. The Police's (350 million USD) for their 151-concert 2007-8 reunion tour.

4. Rolling Stones' (320 million USD) gross for its 1994-5 The Voodoo Lounge Tour for 128 shows.

5. Rolling Stones' (312 million USD) gross from their 2002-3 Licks tour with over 121 shows.

Now it looks like this as of AUG. 15:

1. Rolling Stones' (558 million USD) for the 2005-7 Bigger Bang tour with 144 shows.

2. U2's (389 million USD) for the 2005-6 Vertigo tour with 133 concerts.

3. MADONNA (374 million USD) for the 2008-9 Sticky and Sweet tour with 80 shows so far...

4. The Police's (350 million USD) for their 151-concert 2007-8 reunion tour.

5. Rolling Stones' (320 million USD) gross for its 1994-5 The Voodoo Lounge Tour for 128 shows.

6. Rolling Stones' (312 million USD) gross from their 2002-3 Licks tour with over 121 shows.

we are 20 shows into the 2nd leg reported, i am not sure if last year has 60 dates...

she's on track to having less than 90 dates and gross $400M... it's unbelievable how she achieved this with the current state of the world economy...

an artist with worldwide success can sell an average of 3-5 million copies of an album costing about, say, $10...

now that's gross of just $30M-$50M for a very successful album worldwide...

MADONNA is the envy of cash-hungry artists right now...

Nope, for soccer games it's 43,000. Every site I check says 60,000 for concerts.

The numbers say Madonna sold more tickets in a stadium than U2. Fans say their stage is at the end as well on some (most?) shows, which means U2 stage blocks more seats than Madonna's. In Milan, the seats for Madonna must have been lowered more than just what the stage actually blocks then.

Nope, for soccer games it's 43,000. Every site I check says 60,000 for concerts.

The numbers say Madonna sold more tickets in a stadium than U2. Fans say their stage is at the end as well on some (most?) shows, which means U2 stage blocks more seats than Madonna's. In Milan, the seats for Madonna must have been lowered more than just what the stage actually blocks then.

U2's stage doesn't block anything. yes, in most (if not all) stadiums their stage is indeed constructed at one end of the pitch (and not in the very centre), but that doesn't mean they do not put all of the seats on sale (bar a very small amount that is located directly behind the pillars of the stage construction). there's no such thing at their concert as "behind the stage". with Madonna's tour, there most certainly is.

why Madonna beat U2 in Gothenburg? i guess it's as simple as this: she simply sold more available tickets. plus one more thing is important in answering this question: the Ullevi Stadium's design. as you can see from the photo below, the stands (i.e. tiers with seats) are very small at the ends of the pitch (i.e. not many people can actually seat behind the goal area of the football pitch). that is why Madonna's stage didn't really take away as many seats as for instance in the Wembley stadium that is designed differently. that is also why U2 didn't profit much in attendance if those seats were occupied by spectators. still, how come they still managed to sell less tickets even when they were able to sell all the available seats in the stadium (bar the small amount behind the pillars i already mentioned)? it leaves us with just one answer - the pitch tickets didn't sell as well as they did for the Madonna gig. and look at the second photo below - the pitch was indeed rather empty.

her tickets are also slightly more expensive than U2. That counted too to have these kind of numbers :vogue:

we were talking about the number of tickets being sold, not the boxscore. ;) because, as you stated, her tickets were indeed more expensive, but more expensive tickets would also mean that less people would eventually buy them, since everyone simply cannot afford her prices. comparing M's Gothenburg concerts with U2's dates, an opposite thing happened: she out-sold them despite having higher prices.

in short: we discussed the attendance, not the money. :vogue::)

With a gross of $408 million, Sticky & Sweet is the top-grossing tour by a solo artist of all time, and second only to the Rolling Stones' $558 million Bigger Bang tour of 2005-2007. "She is absolutely one of the great performers of all time," said Arthur Fogel, chairman of Global Music and CEO of Global Touring for Live Nation, producer of Madonna's tours. "That this tour will take its place as the second highest grossing tour in the history of our business says it all."

Since its launch in August 2008, Sticky & Sweet has moved more than 3.5 million fans to 85 shows in 32 countries, according to Live Nation. Madonna set an attendance record for the biggest crowds in history in Zurich, Switzerland, where she drew the largest audience ever for a concert in that country (72,000). According to Live Nation stats, her Gothenburg, Sweden show, seen by 119,000 fans, broke the record for highest grossing multiple shows in the country's history. In Helsinki, Finland, Sticky & Sweet sold more than 85,000 tickets, making it the biggest single show by an artist in history for all of Scandinavia. Other highlights on the tour included stops in Buenos Aires, Argentina (256,000), Santiago, Chile (146,000), Sao Paolo, Brazil (203,000), Tallinn, Estonia (72,000), Warsaw, Poland (79,000), Bucharest, Romania (69,000), and Sofia, Bulgaria (54,000).

Sticky & Sweet broke Madonna's previous record for top solo tour ever. Her Confessions tour was previously tops with a gross of $194 million in 2006, according to Billboard Boxscore. The 2008-2009 tour was the first under Madonna's $120 million, 10-year multi-rights deal with Live Nation.

What happened in Serbia?, that makes and average ticket price of $44 USD. And being the most expensive ticket $138.90, would that means just a few VIP and Golden tickets, and a most of them at $41.61????

I think there's something wrong there.

Madonna set an attendance record for the biggest crowds in history in Zurich,

Switzerland, where she drew the largest audience ever assembled for a show in

that country (72,000). Her Gothenburg, Sweden show, seen by 119,000 fans,

broke the record for highest grossing multiple shows in the country's history.

In Helsinki, Finland, "Sticky & Sweet" sold more than 85,000 tickets, making

it the biggest single show by an artist in history for all of Scandinavia.

Other highlights on the tour included stops in Buenos Aires, Argentina

That Belgrade, Serbia gross was LOW. Very pleasantly surprise to see her do 70,000 in Romania. None of the reports had the attendance that high. Usually on this tour, some of the attendance figures are lower than what is reported but that one was higher. Nice.

i was sure about the almost 70.000 crowd in Bucharest, I didn't want to tell a thing until the official word because I would probably been considered overreacting.

I won't be surprised if her next tour gross lesser than 408m and tabloids (e.g. The Cunt) start to write shit like she's over (of course they will omit the fact that S&S comes with 2nd leg).

Don't forget that she's done this by high ticket prices as much as hard work. How many fans couldn't afford to go? Her set / costumes / technology is really exceptionally 'high end', but, so are the prices... surely the material girl could reduce the ticket prices and genuinely - really - truly - put the fans first!

Half the shows means twice the ticket prices! People on here have endlessly moaned about ticket prices... My wife and I went to Manchester and sat in the car park (virtually) and it cost us the equivalent of two weeks minimum wage. That is just mad. (I still had to go though).

C'mon M show us that it really is all about the music and put on a show with more music less 'frills' and lower prices!!!
