Five international artists scoop IFPI Platinum Europe Awards in the month of June, for album sales of one million or subsequent millions in Europe.

British sensation Corinne Bailey Rae burst onto the music scene early this year with her eponymous debut album. Released in February, Corinne Bailey Rae has now amassed more than one million sales across Europe, gaining the first Platinum Europe Award for the 27-year-old. The singer-songwriter from Leeds scored a UK download Number One with her first single Put Your Records On, and her album also shot to the top of the charts - making her only the fourth British female act in history to have her first album debut at Number One.

The latest album from industry veteran Johnny Hallyday, Ma Vérité, also gains its first Platinum Europe Award, boosted by huge sales in his native France. This is his fourth album to achieve a Platinum Europe Award, and Hallyday has achieved five in total. Arguably the most successful male artist in France - where he has an incredible tally of 33 Number One singles - Hallyday has performed to over 15 million people during his illustrious 40-year career.

American rapper 50 Cent picks up a second Platinum Europe Award for his 2003 album Get Rich Or Die Tryin'. The controversial star - real name Curtis Jackson - has since made his acting debut in a semi-autobiographical film of the same name. Growing up in New York embroiled in a culture of crime and drugs, 50 Cent got his music industry break when he was discovered by Eminem. Since then his career has rocketed and his most recent album, The Massacre, was America's second best-selling album of 2005.

The Kaiser Chiefs' debut offering Employment has also crossed the two million sales mark in Europe, and gone an impressive six times platinum in the UK. Since the album's release in March 2005 the group have taken the live circuit by storm, cementing their increasing popularity. Their success culminated in two Brit Awards this year - for Best British Group and Best British Rock Act. The five-piece from Leeds were also nominated for last year's Mercury Music Prize, and are currently working on the follow-up to Employment.

R.E.M. gain another Platinum Europe Award for The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003. The title has sold over three million copies across 19 European countries, going platinum or multi-platinum in 14. The hugely popular American group formed in 1980 at the University of Georgia, and have released 13 studio albums. This is their second best-of collection, released in October 2003, and features the hits Losing My Religion, Everybody Hurts, Man On The Moon and Nightswimming.

Portugal - not cert. - ~5.000

I have no idea how true this is, but I thought I read on the UKMix forum that American Life had gone platinum in Portugal (20.000)? I have no links or hard data, however she did do a tour stop there - does it seem like it should've sold more?

FUCKING FINALLY 4X PLATINUM! :D

IFPI Platinum Europe Awards - July & August 2006

Keane, Shakira, Coldplay and Madonna scoop summer Platinum Awards

September 13, 2006

The summer has proved a sales hit for a variety of acts as Keane's second album picks up its first Platinum Europe Award, both of Shakira's recent albums clock up their first million, and industry superstars Coldplay and Madonna each have albums selling more than four million copies across Europe.

Keane's hotly anticipated second album Under The Iron Sea gained its first Platinum Europe Award a month after its June release, as sales surpassed the one million mark across Europe this July. The British band won a string of awards on the back of their 2004 debut offering Hopes and Fears, which has sold over two million copies in the UK alone. The three-piece from East Sussex have cemented their popularity with the success of this follow-up album, which includes the recent hit singles Is It Any Wonder? and Crystal Ball.

Columbian songstress Shakira achieves two Platinum Europe Awards this summer. Her album releases of 2005 - Fijacion Oral Vol 1 and the second, English-language instalment Oral Fixation Vol 2 - both crossed the million threshold of European sales. The singer-songwriter recorded her first album at the age of 15, but it was her first English-language offering, Laundry Service, that brought her to the attention of a global audience in 2001. The 29-year-old won six Latin Billboard Awards this year, and her recent collaboration with Wyclef Jean, Hips Don't Lie, has been No.1 in the singles charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

Coldplay's debut title Parachutes has now sold over four million copies across the continent. This brings the group's tally of Platinum Europe Awards to 12, as all three of their studio albums have sold in excess of four million in Europe. Parachutes - which includes the international breakthrough single Yellow - shot to the top spot in the UK album chart on release in July 2000, and stayed in the Top 10 for a staggering 33 weeks. This was an indication of future triumphs for the UK band, as their most recent album X&Y was the biggest selling title worldwide in 2005.

Enduringly popular 'Queen of Pop' Madonna has seen sales of her latest album Confessions On A Dancefloor go from strength to strength, as it also gains its fourth Platinum Europe Award since its release last November. The disco-inspired album is the eleventh studio offering from the American, who has sold over 200 million albums worldwide throughout her illustrious career. Madonna is currently on the European leg of her Confessions world tour, still wowing her army of fans with show-stopping performances after more than two decades in the business.
