WAYNE’S WORLD: With a projected total of 940-955k, it appears that Lil Wayne’s Universal Motown debut will come within a whisper of Kanye West’s 957k bow last September—and that’s something, kiddies. For comparison’s sake, the last release to top a million in its first week was 50 Cent in March 2005, with 1.14m, a year after Usher's 1.09m the previous March.

One other debut will be in six figures—Plies (Slip N Slide/Atlantic) is trending toward 225-240k. Here’s how the rest of next week’s Top 10 is shaping up as we head into the weekend: #3: Now 28 (Capitol) with 140-150k; #4: Disturbed (Reprise) with 95-100k; #5: Usher (LaFace/ZLG) with 95-100k; #6: the debuting N.E.R.D. (Star Trak/Interscope) with 85-90k; #7: Journey’s Wal-Mart exclusive (Frontiers) with 80-85k; and #8: Alanis Morissette (Maverick/Reprise) with 55-60k; with a three-way battle for the last two slots among My Morning Jacket (ATO), Sex and the City (New Line) and Weezer (DGC/Interscope), all of which will finish in the 40-45k range…unless we’re mistaken. (6/13a)

I am still baffled by Lil Wayne's success, there has been but a whisper about him on here or on other boards I go to, whereas an album like E=MC2 was talked about for months in advance, I did not expect him to sell double what Mariah did.

alanis' numbers were pretty weak, right?

Alanis' new CD is fantastic. I think her last album opened at #5, with 115K.

Lil Wayne Within Reach Of Million-Copy Debut

June 13, 2008, 5:50 PM ET

Keith Caulfield, L.A.

The magic million is within sight of Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III." The Cash Money/Universal album continues to lead Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart, released today (June 13). Based on the new tally, the album could sell a million copies by the time SoundScan closes out its tracking week on Sunday night.

Unweighted sales of "Carter" through the close of business yesterday stood at 630,000. That's the largest number the Friday Building chart has seen since it began in September.

The last album to rack up a similar number on a Friday Building chart was Kanye West's "Graduation" (Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam), which posted a 600,000 figure the Friday of its release. "Graduation" would go on to shift 957,000 in its first full week.

The last album to sell a million copies in a week was 50 Cent's "The Massacre" (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope), when it bowed with 1.1 million in March 2005.

Billboard estimates the nine merchants who report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart -- Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Circuit City, iTunes, Starbucks, Borders, Target, Anderson Merchandisers and Handleman Co. -- comprise about 80% of all U.S. album sales.

^They probably have two different catalog numbers so theis sales cannot be combined.

Why are people posting in last week's chart thread??

limited editions, expanded editions (2cd/cd+dvd) usually ahve different catalog numbers from the single disc version but usually they go towards one total...

it could be a commercial decision... i just read ask billboard and someone asked if the deluxe edition of alanis' album will count towards one tally and keith caulfield answered yes... so what's the diff with radiohead? disc one of the 2 cd is the same as the 1 cd

1 MILLION! WOW

Clearly, the many arguments here that the CD market is defunct, can be put to rest. The market is still viable-there are CD buyers!

I dont recall many albums selling 1 million first week even in the heyday of big sales in the 80s and 90s.

maybe like britney, n-synce 2x, and a few others....

remarkable~ MC fans must be devastated!

A one million selling cd in its debut does not mean the cd market is back from the dead.

Just look at the Top 10 sales. That says it all there. The #10 album usually sells 40+k. Now it's around 30k.

I don't know then. Maybe because it was 2cds selling at a higher price? There might be different rules for a one cd album+DVD.

all of the rules regarding CD+DVD editions baffle me. Shakira and Radiohead's editions counted as separate albums, but Justin, Pink, Celine, Janet and plenty of others (and Rihanna and Maroon 5 are coming very soon) have separate CD-only and CD/DVD combo editions but they both counted as the same album

Only 1 album has sold 1 million this year.

God that is so sad. :scared:

Hmmm. Lil Wayne will have the top selling album of the year in a mere two weeks.

well doesnt change the fact that his music is bad and people are going for bad music

...wtf?

SoundScan didn't track sales in the 80s, so we have no way of knowing if any albums sold 1m or close to it in 1 week.

Cyndu Lauper plummeted to No. 134 (the initial SS list had it at 135, but that initial list had a couple albums that actually don't appear on the BB 200), with 4,741 units (down 61%).

Yikes! That's a huge drop down the chart.

As for Mariah, she must be so pissed off with Lil Wayne. She whored herself around during her album's release and plugged her lead single to death and she only managed 470k. :D

doctorj, including street-date violations, Mimi's album did 464,200 and change its first week.
