she's been so successful long enough... she needs to flop already... :dramatic::chuckle:

well, it already happened in 2003

why would Mariah reep the benefits of Mother's Day and not Madonna? Most of the Madonnabes from 1985 are now 35 year old mothers

I've said this before and I'll say it again: MOST CDS do not sell alot of copies these days! I don't know why some of you don't realize this. There are only a handful of artists (mostly younger acts and a few rappers) who sell *massive* amounts of CDs these days.Keep an eye on the chart and you'll see that,in many cases, the Number One CD only sold about 150k (or less) in its first week. That's the new reality and Madonna knows it.She recently said "Thank God I don't have to rely on record sales.I know how to put on a show".

CD sales are irrelevent.Touring is where the real money is.

I KNOW FOR A FACT YOU DONT MEAN THAT!

YOUR IN SHOCK .... ME TOO...2ND WEEK SALES ARE DREADFUL!

:chuckle: of course I don't...

But to be honest, I was really pissed how her camp underpromoted HARD CANDY... they are so miserable in making promo choices, except that sunsilk commercial and the Miles Away tie-up in JAPAN... those were brilliant... but it's clear WBR and MADONNA wants to spend less and earn more... Sunsilk? they earn everything... Miles Away... same case... Radio Interviews? cost nothing much...

it was so obvious that even Billboard noticed the underpromotion of the album.... surely they realize that fans care...

if WBR and MADONNA don't care... what do we do? suffer?

Come on american fans, you should buy another Hard Candy copy...I bought 3 copies(regular, deluxe and digital)

Do you want Madonna as the next Janet Jackson(flopping so hard)? That scares me so much...

Who's suffering? You have the album don't you? I'm sure her fans want to see her do well but this should be bothering Madonna more than her fans.

We should be glad that Madona's career isn't where Janet's career is at these days.Janet has had *THREE* flop albums in a row and her rumored tour might not even happen. If she does tour, can she even sellout arenas? There seems to be a real lack of interest in her.I predict that she will make up some lame excuse (" I decided to film a movie instead") and cancel the tour to save herself the embarassment.

Madonna,on the other hand,is gonna do a fantastic tour. When she's selling out arenas and breaking attendance records, the sales of 'Hard Candy' won't even matter anymore. She'll prove once again that touring is more important than a big-selling album.

WRONG

Americans ARE buying it. They're buying the SINGLE. That's it. People, escpecially teenagers, which is the base demographic for the music industry, DON'T buy albums these days... they buy 1 song on iTunes.

And the gay fanbase is NOT alienated. I can't even tell you all the gays I know that love her new album. She would have to turn republican and say AIDS was a punishment from god, to alienate her gay fanbase.

puhhhh-leazze.

Thanks for pointing this out: MOST PEOPLE IN AMERICA DON'T BUY ALBUMS ANYMORE.I wish everyone would understand this.People download albums and/or buy the singles they like.Very few artists sell alot of CDs in America anymore.Mariah Carey is the exception, not the rule.Despite this,I think 'Hard Candy' is doing okay. How many other 49-year old artists can sell close to 300k in their first week? How many other 49-year old artists have a Top 10 hit single in America these days?

Its sad to buy 3 copies thinking that way the CD will be a success. If warner and Madonna want more CDs sold, produce better songs and promote them properly....

And btw, noone can flop the way Janet does... she is an expert on that

If we're comparing Madonna and Mariah here.

Madonna is selling MUCH better in comparison to their last albums.

Mimi was MASSIVE. EKFC2 is not massive. It will be lucky to sell much more than Confessions.

I hope Madonna can sell around 1 million in the US. That will be a huge hit. HUGE hit in the American market today. HUGE HUGE HUGE.

And, 4 MINUTES is so huge it's crazy. The amount it has sold in the US alone is staggering.

If it were NOT the first single, every single one of you bitchers would be bitching that it wasn't the first single.

^ Although i dont like Mariah, I dont think it is fair to compare Confessions with ECM2, Confessions was released in 2005 where record sales were about 20% higher if not more, so we have to admit that Mariah is performing well (in the US only of course)

I agree that 1 Million would be acceptable, but far from being a huge success though

Madonna doesn't need to manufacture fake marriages and crawl up the butt of Ryan Seacrest, she's doing fine selling millions of copies right across the globe, something Mariah can never do!

Let me repeat, there's more to the music world than the United States Of America.

To be fair, Mariah Carey is NOT the only one selling truckloads. Recent certifications for example:

Carrie Underwood Some Hearts 7x Platinum

Nickelback All The Right Reasons 7xPlatinum

Eagles Long Road Out Of Eden 7x Platinum

Garth Brooks The Ultimate Hits 5x Platinum

Daughtry Daughtry 4x Platinum

Josh Groban Noel 4x Platinum

Alicia Keys As I Am 3x Platinum

Miley Cyrus Hannah Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus 3x Platinum

Fergie The Dutchess 3x Platinum

Akon Konvicted 3x Platinum

Rascal Flatts Me & My Gang 3x Platinum

High School Musical 2 SoundTrack 3x Platinum

Sugarland Enjoy The Ride 2x Platinum

Amy Winehouse Back To Black 2x Platinum

Enrique Iglesias 95/08 Exitos 2x Platinum

John Mayer Continuum 2x Platinum

Linkin Park Minutes To Midnight 2x Platinum

These are just off the top of my head. My point is, alot of people still buy music. Young (High School Musical, Akon) and Old (Eagles). As for Madonna not having a DOUBLE platinum album since Music in 2000, you're guess is as good as mine.

And the woman had to have close to two years of non stop hits just to reach that number. Record sales suck.

If alot of people still buy music, then why is the music industry in such bad shape right now? Make no mistake,MOST CDs that are released today do not sell alot of copies. For every Mariah Carey, there's are dozens of other CDs that come out, debut at Number One,then fade away quickly without even reaching platinum status.Look at Janet's recent album, for example. She didn't even reach gold status in the US or anywhere else. And most of the artists on your list are newer, younger artists.....those aren't 50-year old artists who've been around since 1983 (with the exception of the Eagles,of course).

None of this matters anyway.Record sales are becoming obsolete.Mariah sells more records in the US than Madonna, but does she make more money than Madonna? Not at all.Last year,Mariah made $13 million and Madonna made $72 million. What does that tell you? Why should Madonna care about CD sales when she can go on tour for just three months and easily make over $200 million?

She's keeping those markets for the time when she can no longer sell out the USA.

Madonna is obligated to tour at least twice more in the next 8-9 years. She will go to those markets only when needed.

US Chart Alert:

http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/content_dis...f1d6bf1d1061065

• Last week's No. 1, Madonna's "Hard Candy," falls to No. 3, shifting 94,000 -- with a not-so-sweet 66% decline. That's the third-largest second-week percentage drop for a No. 1-debuting album this year. DAY26's self-titled set (down 73% in its second week) and Janet Jackson's "Discipline" (down 68%) posted bigger erosions. Here is a quick rundown of 2008's No. 1 debuts and their sophomore-frame drops: Mariah Carey's "E=MC2" (61%), Leona Lewis' "Spirit" (54%), George Strait's "Troubadour" (65%), DAY26's "DAY26" (73%), Danity Kane's "Welcome to the Dollhouse" (62%), Rick Ross' "Trilla" (54%), Alan Jackson's "Good Time" (55%), Janet Jackson's "Discipline" (68%) and Jack Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static" (52%).

Thanx for posting that Chris!

The 66% drop is certainly not tragic, even that list proves everyone drops around 60% during second week.

And nice to see SS more than 10k above HDD.
