What's interesting here ist that Madonna was always there!

Even though she may have not be the biggest seller she was always present while the rest are more or less out of the picture.

i could almost bet that they scrap the whole project after gi2m. wbr probably doesnt care b/c i'm sure they at least made some money off the whole thing and they'll just release the ghv3 in september instead of a third single.

M probably is focused on the tour and any video we get just might be like GT or jump and that wont do anything anyway and she is not gonna go to any shows (she would have already) so shes not really too interested either

plus its only at 57 so its chart run isn't finished just yet and gi2m will do ok with digital sales once the single is released on itunes next week-ok meaning mid debut and 4 or 5 weeks on the top 100 tracks chart-

in the end tours are the money maker in camp Madge, albums are only a accessory to her career at this point

Scanned 10,524, for a cume of 580,934- 61,000 and change ahead of where American Life was after 10 weeks. It continues to see similar weekly tallies to AL- AL did 10,490 in its 10th week, but dropped 89-103 on the Billboard 200 that week.

At least Mariah is getting hit also. She drops to from 25-33. Some good news.

How is that good news? Mariah continues to beat Madonna's ass on the charts. Mariah's album came out 2 weeks before Hard Candy, yet it's still higher on the charts.

Madonna is still the #9 selling album in the world, with 88,000 units. Mariah dropped off and sold less than 30,000. There is a big world outside the US and selling units is selling units. I would be much more concerned with number of units total than number of units in the US. Remember there is more to this world than the US.

Well, Mariblah Cow sold 6m+ of her previous turd in the US. This time she will be lucky if she sells 1.5m meaning she lost over 4.5m buyers :demonic:

As Give it 2 me doesn't seem to be helping the album sales, I'm curious to see if her turning 50 next month will have any impact on Hard Candy.

ROL's sales actually increased for a couple of weeks when she turned 40 (OMG. Already 10 years ago!). But that was a better album and there was positive buzz about her turning 40 and being spiritual and a mother.

Yeah but VH1 had their Behind the Music which aired on her 40th and repeated non stop forever. And MTV had a bunch of Madonna specials. I doubt they will be doing anything for her 50th. They have too many shit reality shows to show.

Guest Joey's Hung Up On Madonna

Those albums going 66x platinum sold that went PRIOR to this 2006 when the music industry was still semi-ok. The only way to sell music in our country is to release something of HIGH QUALITY that all ages of people buy - Even older people who don't download music as much.

You forgot:

1989 Paula Abdul "Forever Your Girl" 7 x p

(it was released in 1988 but exploded in 1989 and stayed in the top-10 for almost as long as Like A Prayer was in the top-100 at the same time)

It's true, Madonna was never the biggest seller even among females. But she was always around.

Columbia

2 Bryan Adams

A&M

3 Madonna

Like A Virgin

Sire

5 Tina Turner

Yeah, 1985 was the only year Madonna was THE RED HOT female performer and no other female artist could touch her that year. After that though, she's always been there but you guys have made excellent points. At any given time (except '85) throughout her career there has always been some other female artist who was bigger than her at that time. Typically though, they are nowhere as consistent as Madonna.

I wouldn't dare call LAP a flop, but to me just looking at the bare stats and all the good it had going for it and the music market in 1989, I have to say I've always felt that album underperformed.

And do TRUST AND BELIEVE had this forum been around in 1989 this forum would've been a madhouse. "OMG LAP ONLY went to number one for 3 weeks but the song and video are her best EVER. I thought it would beat LAV 6 week run at number one. She's a flop if she can't beat LAV with THIS masterpiece. OMG LAP is only at 4 million in sales. True Blue sold 7 million and Like A Virgin 10 million....does this mean since the 80's are over she is also since her sales keep declining with each album!??!?!" MAYBE PAULA ABDUL IS THE NEW QUEEN OF POP FOR THE 90'S....AFTER ALL HER ALBUM SOLD WHAT TRUE BLUE SOLD. PAULA IS THE NEW MADONNA!!!" Madonna's old now. I'll be forever your girl Paula!!! :)"

so funny.....and the Erotica years around here would've been a real hoot I'm sure....lol

The 1989 charts debates were just like that!

I collect album reviews and sales data comparisons since the LAP era:

that album was often labelled as a disappointment, there are many reviews

stating

"Ok, she tried to shock us with the first single and video, so the album went to no.1. Then she spent millions of dollars for the second video, but the song flopped (= it didn't catch the no.1 spot). Now we've got a third single and video, in which she tries to be sweet smiling among dolphins. But there's a fact: LAP is struggling to sell a half of what TB did, and Madonna lost her identity. USA has its new Madonna now: Paula Abdul. She sings better than Madonna, she dances better than her".

Other pearls:

"Be careful, Madonna, you are 30 and a series of 20yo newcomers is ready to steal your crown. Their names are Martika, whose Toy Soldier is a tremendous hit, Jody Watley, Tiffany".

"Promise To Try" composed for the fans of Debbie Gibson, because she's a copycat of her ballads.

"Madonna is trying to recupe her lost fans, tired of her sex/religion exploits, so her new single Dear Jessie is a baroque and her new video is a cartoon, but it is already a flop".

"Madonna recycled the vogueing and released a catchy but forgettable song. But the real winner of this 1990 is Sinead O'Connor"

"Nobody is interested to a Madonna greatest hits because everybody owns the albums. She was forced to realize a porno video trying to sell her GH"

Etcetera.

oh god, I remember the Paula stuff. My sister who was a huge fan even thought that Madonna was going out the door as soon as the 90's took over while Paula was going to become the next big icon

:lmao:

What's funny is that you can use those quotes for all of the Madonna eras since then. Even Ray Of Light, when Madonna was outsold by the likes of Shania Twain, Celine Dion and Lauryn Hill.

And I agree with Kurt, it does feel that the Like A Prayer underperformed, but as said, she changed her image so she probably lost a lot of young and casual fans. It was more or less a 50% drop in the USA, but if you look at worldwide stats, it sold 10 million less than True Blue.

Very true but don't forget that when these charts were created back in the day technology was very different and the internet also didn't exist. In some ways, if you really think about it, it's a bit out of date. The internet has made things more of a global community. I am not bitching or asking for things to change. Just making an observation.

...And you can use them for all artists who have a career that has lasted more than 20 years.

For David Bowie since the "death" of Ziggy Stardust (1973!), it doesn't matter if he released his best albums since then.

For Prince since Purple Rain (Parade and Sign 'o' The Times, among its best works, were labelled as flops)

For Michael Jackson... I remember many people stating "Bad" was a disappointment after "Thriller"!
