  • 2 weeks later...
GI2M last week on the Top 200 Digital chart was two weeks ago. From Pulse:

6 114 136 200 MADONNA GIVE IT 2 ME 7,275 -21 9,259 166,940

Well... at least it should pass the 200,000 downloads after the tour hit US... hopefully even pass the 300,000 mark before the end year... though the song underperformed worldwide... but especially in US... why are good songs always threated like this? :dramatic:

It pretty much flopped everywhere, not just the US by Madonna second single standards.

She's Not Me or Beat Goes On would have been better.

Not at all, quite far from it in fact. It was a huge hit in Belgium & Netherlands, possibly her biggest second single ever. It was the 2nd-biggest second single of her last 15+ years in Germany (only "Sorry" did better). Songs like "Ray Of Light" or "Don't Tell Me" didn't even enter the Top 20 of Germany. A Top 5 hit in France & Italy as well. And even though peaked only at #7 in the UK, it already sold more than 100k and its chart run already eclipsed several Top 5 hits of her already.

The only countries where it actually flopped are the US & Australia.

so Give it 2 me only sold 200.000 copies in the US?

isn't that quite good if you look at sales of her singles overall? Some of them didn't even make 100,000

^How exactly did it "come" after "4 Minutes"? It was there on iTunes all along but it didn't get exposure. Just because of a double platinum song, people won't start looking for the next Madonna song that did not get played on radio. It charted on the Hot 100 during the album release week because there was a bonus remix added there so more people were cherry-picking it than the rest of the tracks.

^Yes. I don't think we can even consider GI2M a minor hit in the USA. Yes, at least it was a Hot 100 hit (as opposed to the AL singles and GT and "Jump"), but it debuted at No. 57 on the strength of the Oakenfold mix that was available the week of the album release and was never seen on the Hot 100 again after that week.

I was looking at the UK iTunes and GI2M is way out in front in terms of sales. 4M is quite a way behind although overall, 4M was number one and sold loads and GI2M got to No.7 - still sold ok.

I can't work out why GI2M seems to have sold so many more on iTunes here although I personally prefer it.

GI2M wouldn't have been eligible to chart on Bubbling Under, as it had already charted for one week, so even if it sold enough to approach the Hot 100, it wouldn't have appeared on BU.

and are it sales good for what it peaked at?

It charted for one week with zero airplay. Not sure how this can be more dissected than it already had been.

I think that's popularity only, and it probably comes from the fact that "GI2M" was a later single. "4M" sold more than twice as "GI2M" in the UK.

GI2M may have had a couple hundred thousand in audience thw weke it appeared on the Hot 100. ;)

GI2M apparently was close to re-entering the Hot100 the week the digital mixes were released, but no cigar. It had half the airplay (if that) of "Sorry" in the USA.

"Sorry" charted more traditionally, debuting when it was being promoted as the second release, when airplay was at/near its peak (the little it had) and the maxi release occurred the week it had its highest weekly sales (almost 16,800, when combining physical and digital- if you had an all-encompassing sales chart, "Sorry" would have ranked around No. 28, with the physical sales added to the digital).

Hmm...does that matter though? I mean, if ultimately the charts are about what is popular - and people liked the Oakenfold mix enough to buy it immediately rather than wait for the single release later - then does it matter when it peaked or for how long?

What else would you call it but a minor hit?

Well, there are all levels of hits, and it depends on the act we're discussing (different standards for them). I'd consider "Sorry" was a very minor hit- it stayed on the Hot 100 for six weeks, at least.

GI2M was more like a blip- in for a week, gone the next. It was a Hot 100 hit, obviously- but it appearance was so fleeting that it just didn't even feel like even a minor hit- especially as it didn't chart on any radio format chart other than Dance Radio Airplay. I mean, even "Hollywood" cracked Adult Top 40 (as did "Sorry"). Make sense?

eh?!?! That's popularity only? That is the point - 4M sold more than twice that GI2M in the Uk yet on iTunes, it is showing GI2M as way out in front...

Surely, if 4M sold many more copies then its iTunes popularity should exceed that of GI2M?

Or does the iTunes popularity thing not just mean downloads or is there a time thing involved?

i thought gi2m charted on pop 100 airplay( in the 70's or something), or was that just on mediabase. Also gi2m got some decent play on some sirius satelite stations.

why did sorry stay so long on the hot 100 compared to gi2m? was it just becasue the sales were higher for that time period?

GI2M did chart near the bottom of the Pop 100 when it was the active second single. It peaked in the 40s on Radio & Records' CHR/Pop chart- but Billboard's Mainstream Top 40 chart is 40 positions, and it didn't crack that or any other format chart other than Dance Airplay).

When digital sales were added to the Hot 100 mix in February 2005, the, sales divider was 5- meaning, if a track sold 15,000, that was divided by 5, to give it 3,000 chart points. (then, when digital sales really took off, it was changed back to 10), so "Sorry" benefited from that some. Its airplay peak was more than twice as large was GI2M- granted, that's a small number, but all that together helped.
