EAGLES WOULD’VE BEEN #1 WITH 700K IN SALES

New Album’s Exclusivity At Wal-Mart Prevents it From Charting

November 6, 2007

The Long Road Out of Eden leads to the #1 best-selling album in the country this week, but the Eagles won’t be topping the HITS Album chart.

That dubious honor will go to Britney Spears’ Blackout this week, even though it won’t sell half of Eden’s estimated 700k.

That’s because the Eagles’ two-disc set of 20 new songs, released last Tuesday (10/30), is available exclusively at Wal-Mart, Walmart.com, Sam’s Clubs and Samsclub.com.

The total represents the largest first-week sales of any music product at Wal-Mart in the last two years, where it is selling for $11.88 or $10.88 in downloadable MP3 format online. The chain reportedly bought 3 million copies of the new album with a no-return policy.

Wal-Mart Entertainment SVP Gary Severson is happy: “We were confident that Eagles fans would embrace Long Road Out of Eden, but it has exceeded our first-week projections. With the holiday season approaching, we are confident that the double-CD package will be one of the biggest sellers in Wal-Mart history. We’ve notified the RIAA of the sales to quickly certify Long Road Out of Eden’s multi-platinum status.”

That particular award is not restricted by the album’s exclusive one-retailer status.

Added Eagles manager Irving Azoff in between rounds of golf: “The band produced and delivered an album of integrity that was in keeping with their legacy…and the fans responded. The phenomenal first week sales of Long Road Out of Eden are a testament to Wal-Mart’s marketing and distribution.”

One of the band’s chief stated reasons in going with Wal-Mart was the company’s commitment to “green” environmental initiatives, and that is borne out by the album packaging, which features recycled paper publicly endorsed by the Rainforest Alliance. The CD package also contains 30% post-consumer recycled fiber, and virgin fiber from approved forests or other controlled sources.

The Eagles have sold more than 120 million albums worldwide and have won four Grammy Awards. Eagles, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 is the best-selling album of all time, exceeding sales of 29 million units. The band’s Hotel California and Eagles Greatest Hits Volume 2 have sold more than 16 and 11 million albums, respectively. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. The new album is the band's first all-new studio effort since 1979's The Long Run.

No, they are not.

HITS is not the same as Billboard.

But :dramatic: Look at this HDD quote:

"The Long Road Out of Eden leads to the #1 best-selling album in the country this week, but the Eagles won’t be topping the HITS Album chart.

That dubious honor will go to Britney Spears’ Blackout this week, even though it won’t sell half of Eden’s estimated 700k."

And all of sudden they included them :manson::rolleyes: I fear Billboard would do that! :sneaky:

That’s because the Eagles’ two-disc set of 20 new songs, released last Tuesday (10/30), is available exclusively at Wal-Mart, Walmart.com, Sam’s Clubs and Samsclub.com.

Well, that looks like more than one retailer to me.

Billboard.biz:

Eagles May Have Week's Best Seller

October 31, 2007 - Retail

By Geoff Mayfield, L.A.

If Wal-Mart chooses to report sales of its exclusive Eagles album, the veteran band could surpass Britney Spears next week on Billboard's Top Comprehensive Albums, according to Eagles manager Irving Azoff.

Spears' "Blackout," her first studio album since 2003, led Nielsen SoundScan's Building Chart with 124,000 sold when the chart was released earlier today (Oct. 31). The Eagles' "Long Road Out of Eden" was missing from that list, which suggests Wal-Mart will choose not to report sales from the title, as was the case with exclusive Garth Brooks albums it sold in prior years.

“If the Eagles were SoundScanning this week, even though it's only available at one retailer, Britney wouldn't be No. 1” on the Building Chart, said Azoff, speaking by phone Wednesday from London, where the Eagles played a showcase for media and Universal Music Group honchos at Indigo2 Club.

Titles that are not generally available at retail are not eligible to appear on The Billboard 200, but are entitled to chart on Billboard's Top Comprehensive Albums, which includes catalog titles and proprietary albums from retailers willing to report those sales.

Best Buy, Starbucks and iTunes are the accounts that have been most willing for their exclusive titles appear on Top Comprehensive Albums and Top Comprehensive Music Videos, but most other chains have withheld charting their proprietary offerings.

Target had been among those holdouts, but did elect to allow Collective Soul's recent "Afterwords," sold only at Target stores and by iTunes to chart. It peaked at No. 25 on Top Comprehensive Albums.

Wal-Mart has until the end of the tracking week to decide whether it wishes to report sales of the Eagles album. A Wal-Mart source told ABC News Radio that "Eden" posted the best first-day total "by far" for that chain, which includes Sam's Club stores. The source did not reveal that total, but said it exceeded projections by 50%.

Aside from two compilations, "Eden" is the Eagles’ first album since the live "Hell Freezes Over," which led The Billboard 200 for two weeks in 1994.

THE EAGLES FLY TO #1

HITS’ Album Sales Chart Will Reflect Wal-Mart Sales of 700k+

November 6, 2007

There’s no denying reality.

Despite that other chart’s refusal to recognize the Eagles’ sales feat this week, HITS has decided that the band’s Long Road Out of Eden album should be #1 on our Top 50, easily outdistancing Britney Spears’ Jive/ZLG effort Blackout.

According to Wal-Mart, the band’s first all-new studio album since 1979’s The Long Run sold 707,253 copies exclusively at the retailer’s outlets nationwide.

Britney’s new album is one of six newcomers to the Top 10, with a total of 290k, good for #2.

WB’s Avenged Sevenfold (#4), MCA Nashville’s Josh Turner (#5), Jive/ZLG’s Backstreet Boys (#6) and Decca’s Andrea Bocelli greatest hits album (#9) are the other new Top 10 entries.

If you’re counting, that gives ZLG’s Team Weiss two out of the top six in Britney and the Backstreets.

The only holdovers to the Top 10 are Arista Nashville’s Carrie Underwood (#2), Rounder’s Robert Plant and Alison Krauss (#7), Reprise’s Josh Groban (#8) and Lyric Street’s Rascal Flatts (#10).

Other debuts are registered by Red Ink rockers Puscifer’s elegantly titled V is for Vagina (#31), Def Jam/IDJ’s Playaz Circle (#33), Arista/RMG’s Baby Bash (#35) and Koch’s Project Pat (#45).

Hollywood’s Jonas Brothers lead the double-digit gainers for the week, rising #43-20 with an 84% boost, thanks to their appearance on the Hannah Montana tour and a spate of TV appearances. American Gramophone’s holiday perennial Mannheim Steamroller is up #45-34, with a 44% boost.

Next week, Roc-A-Fella/IDJ’s Jay-Z, Jive/ZLG’s Chris Brown and Pearl/Bic Machine's Garth Brooks will all be vying for the top spot.

WAIT!!!!! Will Billboard really change their chart policy for the Billboard 200?

HITS:

SCAN FOLLOWS SUIT: No sooner did we announce that the Eagles would be #1 on HITS' Building Album Sales chart this week than that other trade magazine has come out with the news that, despite the fact Long Road Out of Eden is available exclusively at Wal-Mart and the band's website, it will be #1 on theirs as well.

The move is already being enthusiastically embraced by our reader, one Jill Fouts of cbgla.com, who writes: "I have to give you guys kudos for embracing reality and putting the Eagles at the top of your chart!" Of course, that's about the only reality we've embraced over the past 21 years. (11/6p)

everyone knows my opinions on Britney, but I wouldn't say she's flopping. She's been around nine years now.... nine years ago people likened her to a modern day Debbie Gibson. Debbie wasn't even cracking the top 200 nine years into her career, yet Britney can still open with nearly 300k? I'd say she's doing okay considering all of the negative criticism she's getting. I remember right after the VMA performance, there were articles saying that it's official that you can call Britney a "former" pop star, and yet she can still do almost 300k? Not bad considering she is half-assing her career right now

Exactly! The media is going to spin this to make it look like Britney flopped. But 300k is nothing to sniff at either, especially for someone who is getting negative press virtually every single day. I always thought that the Eagles would be a threat to her when I heard they had an album coming out at the same time. I wasn't aware until the past week that they would only be selling it in Wal-Mart, thus making it ineligible to chart (at the time anyways). You just can't ignore 700k though, if Billboard hadn't decided to make it eligible there credibility (or what's left of it) would've been seriously compromised.

Changing the rule of all sudden could hurt them as well. And this "not deserving #1 album" is good for Britney too :p

Wait, will Billboard still report The Eagles as having the #1 album, since Soundscan will in fact be tracking the album? Certain media outlets are still reporting that the album is still ineligible to chart on the main album chart.

And the Nielsen numbers are not finalized, but it looks like the Eagles's new album will nearly double the sales of the so-so comeback by Britney Spears (705k to 328k). Spears will debut on #1 on the Billboard 200 only because Soundscan does not accept sales figures from department stores like Walmart.

Revised Chart Policy Lands Eagles At No. 1

The Eagles' first new studio album in 28 years, "Long Road Out of Eden," takes a short route to No. 1 on The Billboard 200 after Billboard revised a significant chart policy today (Nov. 7).

In consultation with Nielsen SoundScan, Billboard will now allow exclusive album titles that are only available through one retailer to appear on The Billboard 200 and other charts, effective with this week's charts. Prior to this, proprietary titles were not eligible to appear on most Billboard charts.

Early SoundScan numbers have the Eagles taking the top perch on The Billboard 200 with 711,000 copies sold, with most sales moved by Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores. For now, the only other U.S. outlets carrying "Eden" are walmart.com, where both physical copies and downloads are sold, and the Eagles' own Web site.

"Eden" became available at the mass-market chain Oct. 30. Aside from two compilations, this is the Eagles' first album since the mostly live "Hell Freezes Over," which led The Billboard 200 for two weeks in 1994.

Britney Spears' new Jive album, "Blackout," which would have been No. 1 had the Eagles' data not been reported, will open at No. 2 with first-week sales of 290,000 copies.

"We know that some retailers will be uncomfortable with this policy, but it was inevitable that Billboard's charts would ultimately widen the parameters of to reflect changes that are unfolding in music distribution," says Geoff Mayfield, Billboard's director of charts. "We would have preferred to make this decision earlier, but only became aware within the last 24 hours that Wal-Mart would be willing to share the data for this title with Nielsen SoundScan."

The revised policy initially impacts The Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums, where "Eden" will also bow at No. 1. Criteria for the remainder of Billboard's albums charts will be formulated later this week. A handful of other titles will debut this week on The Billboard 200 as a consequence of the policy revision.

Previously, titles that were not generally available at retail were not eligible to appear on The Billboard 200, but were entitled to chart on Billboard's Top Comprehensive Albums, which includes catalog titles and proprietary albums from retailers willing to report those sales.

The comprehensive chart will continue to appear on Billboard.biz, to show how catalog titles compete with the overall market. However, once parameters for the remainder of the album charts are determined, Top Comprehensive Music Videos will be discontinued, as exclusive titles will then be eligible for the Nielsen SoundScan-fed Top Music Videos.
