HITS:

PLAYING IT FORWARD: As we approach the blessed relief of the first weekend of autumn, it’s time once again to fearlessly predict the order and totals of next week’s chart. After a mind-blowing start, Kanye West (Roc-A-Fella/IDJ) will get a run for his money from the debuting Reba McEntire (MCA Nashville) and her duet partners, with each album churning toward a finish in the vicinity of 225-250k. 50 Cent (Shady/ Aftermath/ Interscope) will be solidly entrenched at #3 with 175-200, followed by Kenny Chesney (SBMG Nashville) with 120-125k. Barry Manilow’s paean to’70s pop (RCA) will round out the Top 5, just topping 100k in its first week.

Following Disney’s #6 High School Musical 2, with 90-95k, are four more debuts: Universal Motown’s Chamillionaire at 85-90k, Atlantic’s James Blunt at 80-85k, Virgin’s KT Tunstall at 50-55k and Atlantic’s Twista at 40-45k.

Other debuts this week: Motion City Soundtrack (Epitaph), 25-30k; Eddie Vedder (RCA), 30-35k, HIM (Sire), 30-35k; Dropkick Murphys (Born & Bred), 25-30k; Diana Krall (Verve), 25-30k; and Between the Buried and Me (Victory), 12-15k. Now, get outta here, you knuckleheads. (9/21a)

From Billboard.biz:

Reba Poised For First Career No. 1

September 21, 2007

By Geoff Mayfield, L.A.

Billboard's first Woman of the Year may be in line for her first career No. 1 on The Billboard 200, as Reba McEntire's new album leads the Friday edition of Nielsen SoundScan's Building Chart.

Unweighted sales through close of Thursday from 94% of the Building Chart panel stand at 155,000 for "Reba Duets," which means McEntire is on course

for her biggest sales week in more than a decade. Kanye West's "Graduation" stands is the Friday runner-up at 91,000.

An informed source estimates that West's album and 50 Cent's "Curtis" will each experience second-week declines of 76% after turning heads this with totals of 957,000 and 691,000, respectively.

Billboard estimates that the merchants who report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building Chart--Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Circuit City, iTunes, Border's, Target, Anderson Merchandisers, and Handleman Co.--represents 79% of the U.S. retail market.

McEntire appeared on the Sept. 19 telecast of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on an

episode that also featured Justin Timberlake and Kelly Clarkson, who each take turns on "Reba Duets."

HITS:

NO COOLING REBA: Thanks to a supporting hand from her pal Oprah, who sent sales through the roof, MCA Nashville diva Reba McEntire will have the best-selling album in her career with Duets, which is now looking over 300k, more than surpassing last week's champ, IDJ's Kanye West, who will be off more than 80% at a little over 200k.

Guest Beautiful Stranger

I am still surprised James Cunt is doing so poorly. I figured he'd be a Coldplay type

James will be a one hit wonder. YB will be the biggest thing he ever does by far.

true, but I figured when the album stayed on the chart for a year after YB peaked and sold about 3 million that he would be in the Coldplay/Dido type of "one hit per album, but lots of sales" vein

209k sounds a wee bit better for Kanye than 91k.

Did Oprah help Kelly's cd at all?

Also, the Bee Gees "Greatest" cd at #35 is a reissue of a 1979 album which had been out of print a few years, down to the cover-art, what makes it different than any other catalog title that would go to Pop Catalog instead of the regular chart?

Reba Outmuscles Kanye, 50 To Score First No. 1

September 26, 2007

by Katie Hasty, N.Y.

In a week where six of the top 10 slots on The Billboard 200 are occupied by new releases, Reba McEntire's "Reba Duets" reigns at No. 1. Moving 301,000 copies in the United States, the MCA Nashville album provides the country star's best sales week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991.

The star-studded set, her first No. 1 on The Billboard 200, includes collaborations with artists like Rascal Flatts, Faith Hill, Kenny Chesney, Justin Timberlake and Kelly Clarkson; it's with the latter artist that McEntire duets with on "Because of You," which already peaked at No. 2 on the Hot Country Songs chart.

After debuting at No. 1 last week, Kanye West's Def Jam album "Graduation" falls to No. 2 with 226,000, a sales slide of 76%. 50 Cent's "Curtis" does nearly the same, slipping 2-3 with 143,000 (-79%).

Barry Manilow earns his third top five album in a row as "The Greatest Songs of the Seventies" (Arista) debuts at No. 4 with 113,000. It's the singer's third "Greatest Songs" set, with "... of the Fifties" bowing at No. 1 and "... of the Sixties" entering at No. 2. The new effort's tally includes 41,000 copies sold during a promotion on shopping channel QVC.

Kenny Chesney's "Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates" (BNA/Sony BMG Nashville) descends 3-5 in its second week with 112,000 (-71%), while Disney's "High School Musical 2" slides 4-6 with 99,000 (-25%).

British singer/songwriter James Blunt's sophomore album, "All the Lost Souls," opens at No. 7, moving 92,000. The Custard/Atlantic set comes follows his 2005 U.S. debut, "Back to Bedlam" which featured the smash hit "You're Beautiful." Fellow Brit KT Tunstall's sophomore Virgin set, "Drastic Fantastic," debuts at No. 9 with 50,000. Her debut, 2006's "Eye to the Telescope," topped out at No. 33.

Chamillionaire's "Ultimate Victory" (Chamillitary/Universal Motown) debuts at No. 8 with 79,000 units, which is a charting best for the Houston rapper. His debut, 2005's "The Sound of Revenge," entered at No. 10 with 130,000.

Twista's fifth album, "Adrenaline Rush 2007" (Atlantic) enters at No. 10 with 41,000. That's a significant decline from 2005's "The Day After," which bowed at No. 2 with 129,000.

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder's soundtrack to the Sean Penn-directed "Into the Wild" (J) bows at No. 11 with 39,000, while H.I.M.'s "Venus Doom" (Sire/London/Rhino) begins at No. 12, a charting best for the Finnish metal group.

Other big debuts this week include Epitaph rock troupe Motion City Soundtrack's "Even If It Kills Me" at No. 16 with 33,000, Diana Krall's "The Very Best of Diana Krall" (Verve) at No. 19 with 30,000, Dropkick Murphys' "The Meanest of Times" (Born & Bred) at No. 20 with 28,000, Gloria Estefan's "90 Millas" (Burgundy) at No. 25 with 23,000 and Mark Knopfler's "Kill to Get Crimson" (Warner Bros.) at No. 26, with only a few dozen short of Estefan's total at 23,000. In all, 31 new albums appeared on The Billboard 200 this week.

At 8.29 million, sales are down 9.5% compared to last week's total and down 13.8% from the same sum this time last year.

ONE-DAY SALES: RASCAL FLATTS WILL CORRAL TOP SPOT, WHILE KEYSHIA COLE HITS A HIGH NOTE

OK, So It’s Not Another Super Tuesday, but Six Records Could Be in Six Figures Next Week

September 26, 2007

There are plenty of variables as we crunch the early numbers for next week’s top sellers, but one thing is already clear: Rascal Flatts will be the runaway chart-topper. Early returns have the Lyric Street band winding up in the neighborhood of 525k, powered by a #1 Country single.

The other big debut is from R&B songstress Keyshia Cole, whose Geffen release is picking up momentum and rolling toward a solid #2 bow of around 300k, making it the feel-good story of the week.

Two more records should bow with relatively big numbers. RCA’s Foo Fighters are churning toward 175-185k, thanks in large part to monster iTunes support. And Hidden Beach’s Jill Scott is on target for 125k.

Island/IDJ has the next pair of debuts, with Jagged Edge projecting to 80-90k, and Melissa Etheridge gunning for 50k.

Among the other notable new releases are Polydor diva Queen Latifah (35-40k), a solo album from Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am, on Interscope (30-35k) and Columbia crooner Tony Bennett (30-35k).

As for the incumbents, expect Reba McEntire (MCA Nashville), this week’s chart-topper, to drop by more than 50% from her first-week tally of 302k, while #2 Kanye West (Roc-A-Fella/IDJ) and #3 50 Cent (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) should experience declines of around 30%, meaning Kanye has a shot at staying in six figures.

Dollying back to the big picture, album sales were down 9.5% from last week, and off nearly 14% from the same week of 2006. That puts the biz at -14.3% year-to-date.

The iTunes rush of overzealous fans should send "Gimme a Migraine" into the top 10 next week.

Nice to see WK spend a second week in the top 10.

I can't believe that you don't like GM HG. It is a great dance pop song. We need more of those in the states. Oh and yes very nice that Who Knew became a hit!

Now now HG...you're starting to sound like a geriatric old fart.

Can't believe I don't like it? It's monotonous and goes nowhere. Most of her music isn't great, but at least there are a few that I kinda like and a few others Ican listen to and enjoy for what they are. This really ain't one of them.

The girl has one thing in common with her former mentor, and that's they she's a huge media attraction. Once you get to the work they've done, those comparisons STOP. (nop pun intended to You Drive Me Crazy")
