...and Bob Marley and The Wailer's Legend is 10x Platinum despite only peaking at #132 on the BB Top 200. :wow:

(It was #132, correct?) It is proof that not only chart peaks are not the most important thing, but also are often misleading.

Wow. And sometimes albums that peak in the top ten never get certified while some albums that peak in the 100s recieve a certification.

No reson to feel bad for Kenny- he's a solid seller, and it's about longevity/overall performance, not the chart peak.

American Life peaked at No. 1 and Ray of Light peked at No. 2- see. ;)

lol, tell that to 50 Cent, who takes a #2 peak even worse than Mariah does, lol

I think Legend peaked higher than 132, but point is the same- for some titles, initial chart performance doesn't tell the story. Legend has spent sooooooo many weeks logged in the catalog top 50.

Same for Patsy Cline's Greatest Hits, which never even appeared on the BB 200.

Kanye Crushes 50 Cent In Huge Album Sales Week

September 18, 2007

by Geoff Mayfield, L.A.

Kanye West's "Graduation" (Def Jam) easily leads the star-studded class of Sept. 11 releases, posting The Billboard 200's largest sales total in more than two years. Nielsen SoundScan will show West's album moved 957,000 during its first six days when the tracking service refreshes its charts tomorrow morning (Sept. 19).

Also pumping album volume are 50 Cent's "Curtis" (G-Unit/Interscope), which will lock down the No. 2 slot with 691,000 sold. Kenny Chesney's "Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates" (BNA/Sony BMG Nashville) will bow at No. 3 with 387,000 copies.

The total for West's "Graduation" is the largest by any album since 50 Cent's "The Massacre" opened with 1.1 million copies in March 2005. West's own August 2005 album, "Late Registration," was the last album to surpass 800,000 copies when it began with 860,000.

While West beats 50 Cent in the celebrated clash between rappers, the real winners are music merchants. With the "High School Musical 2" soundtrack at No. 4 selling 133,000 copies, the top four titles alone account for 2.2 million units, more than all titles combined on last week's entire Billboard 200.

West's new album ranks 15th among all sales weeks since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking in 1991. The double punch provided by "Graduation" and "Curtis" also marks just the second time in that era that two albums have bowed in the same week with totals surpassing 600,000 copies.

The last such occasion was in September 1991, when Guns N' Roses' "Use Your Illusion II" led The Billboard 200 with 770,000 copies in the same week that the band's companion album "Use Your Illusion I" bowed at No. 2 with 685,000, a pair of numbers now beaten by West and 50's totals.

"Graduation" also rings up the largest week yet by a digital album download, starting with 133,000, beating the prior record of 102,000, set earlier this year by Maroon 5's "It Won't Be Soon Before Long."

50 Cent and Chesney will occupy the same ranks on Top Digital Albums as they do on The Billboard 200, the former with 58,000 downloads and Chesney's with 36,000. Nielsen SoundScan has been tracking digital sales since midway through 2003.

Chesney's overall total of 387,000 copies marks the largest sales week for a country album since the May 2006 arrival of Dixie Chicks' "Taking the Long Way," which opened at 526,000 copies.

Billboard.com:

Album Sales Down 9% Despite Huge Kanye, 50 Tallies

September 19, 2007

by Katie Hasty, N.Y.

It's an exciting week at the top of The Billboard 200 chart, as three of the year's most anticipated releases enter in the top three slots. But despite the hubbub over the Kanye West/50 Cent/Kenny Chesney showdown, sales are still down 9% compared to the same week last year at 9.16 million.

As reported last night, West's "Graduation" (Def Jam) debuts at No. 1 with a whopping 957,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, trouncing the 691,000 unit entry of 50 Cent's "Curtis" (G-Unit/Interscope) at No. 2. "Graduation" is the biggest selling album so far this year and is the 15th biggest sales frame since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991.

The last album to move at least that many was, ironically, "The Massacre" by 50 Cent in 2005, with 1.1 million. Chesney's "Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates" (BNA/Sony BMG Nashville) also kicks off with a big number, moving 387,000 to debut No. 3. It's the largest sales week for a country album since the May 2006 arrival of Dixie Chicks' "Taking the Long Way," which opened with 526,000 copies.

With such strong debuts, the soundtrack to Disney's "High School Musical 2" finally falls to No. 4 after four weeks at No. 1, moving 133,000 copies after a 19% sales slide. Another Disney soundtrack, Miley Cyrus' double-disc set "Hannah Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus," slips 3-5 with 42,000 (-10%). Fergie's "The Dutchess" (Interscope) falls 2-6 with 41,000 (-17%), while Nickelback's Roadrunner effort "All the Right Reasons" climbs 8-7 with 35,000 (-4%).

With help from the popular single "Bubbly," Colbie Caillat's Universal Republic debut "Coco" rebounds 14-8 with a 25% sales surge at to 32,000. The "NOW 25" hits compilation slips 7-9 with 32,000 (-16%), while Justin Timberlake's "FutureSex/LoveSounds" (Jive) re-enters the top tier 12-10 with a 14% sales increase to 31,000; it was precisely this week one year ago that the effort bowed at No. 1.

Another big debut this week is the "Grey's Anatomy 3" soundtrack (Hollywood) at No. 16 with 27,000. Trisha Yearwood's "Greatest Hits" (MCA Nashville) lands at No. 22 with 22,000 and B5's "Don't Talk, Just Listen" (Bad Boy) starts at No. 27 with 19,000.

I hope "Do It" does better than All Good Things does. I don't understand why radio was so resisting to AGT when it came straight off the heels of a #1 smash

The Mediabase audience for "Do It" stands at just 4.5m (down from last week), so I don't think it's going to all that much further.

And, yay for "Who Knew"- still not tired of it.

Not sure how "Do It Well" is Bubbling Under with no sales points (unless I missed somethin')- its Mediabase tally is 7.4m or so- maybe Latin stations not included in that tally?

why is radio so resistant to Do It and All Good Things, when it ate Say It Right up? Makes you wonder if there's Payola involved because it seems weird how Nelly had two #1 blockbuster singles, yet the other singles failed miserably at radio (Maneater at least had high digital sales)

I got my answer. There is an email about madonna, britney and leaks below this too. DP were selling less about 1000 digital downloads pre Stronger, thats not bad.

DAFT PUNK GETS STRONGER

Hello Keith,

My question has to do with Kanye West's song "Stronger." Has the single's sample of Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" helped sales of the album "Discovery" (where "Harder" can be found)?

Thanks,

Andres Escobar

Hi Andres,

In the past month, "Discovery" has been selling about twice as much as it was back in June, previous to the release of "Stronger." Don't get too excited, as "Discovery" is still selling only about 1,000 copies a week. However, if we look at the digital download sales of the song "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger," it's a much rosier picture. For the week ending Sept. 9, the song sold over 4,000. Compare that to the week ending June 17, before West's song was released, when "Harder" only sold about 1,000 downloads.

Daft Punk is preparing to release "Alive 2007" on Nov. 20 (http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003631538). The set captures the electronic act's June 14, 2007 show in Paris.

Most people in the US that know Kanye and "Stronger" have no idea Daft Punk has anything to do with it. And most people in the US don't even who they are in general.

12, just think of the #1s list, with Mimi at No. 3, snugged between Elvis and Michael Jackson, and ahead of Madonna, The Supremes, etc. And to think- she's gonna have more than Elvis and possibly even The Beatles one day. (not hating on Mimi, but come on, ya know).

Most of the public would be hard-pressed to name any more than 1 or 2 of Janet and Mariah's Top 10 hits.

What? Janet Jackson's older music still gets a lot of radio airplay here in the USA.

I still hear Nasty, What have You Done For Me Lately, When I Think Of You, Escapade, Love Will Never Do Without You, That's The way Love Goes, Again, Together Again and All For You on the radio.

Compared to the other "divas," Janet's recurrent airplay doesn't compare, though. I mean, in most weeks, "Luv me Luv Me" is her most-played recurrent, followed by "That's the Way Love Goes." She doesn't even have a track that gets spun 300+ times/week in the USA (TTWLG usually is less than 200).

I'd imagine it's even worse in the UK and Europe.

that isn't bad at all for a six year old album that wasn't exactly a smash upon initial release. Compare it with Music and All For You, which were current albums at the same time Discovery was, neither of them have seen a 200 week in a long time, and those albums initially did 3 million, Daft's album did a couple hundred thousand copies at best.

i am not a huge radio listener but the last time i heard janet on the radio was "all for you". i dont think i have ever heard any of her songs ever get recurrent airplay. mariah on the other hand may have "dreamlover", "AIWFCIY" and even thats it. whitney might get a few spins from her first 2 albums or the bodyguard.

m songs i hear quite a bit are holiday, like a virgin, into the groove, papa dont preach, open your heart, la isla bonita, like a prayer - occasionally, express yourself, vogue (1 of the more well played), frozen, ray of light, beautiful stranger, music,
