Kanye Opening Week of 800k+ Will Be Biggest in Two Years, 50 Cent at 600k, Kenny Chesney 450k

September 12, 2007

School may have just started, but Kanye West Graduation has come just in time for the beleaguered music biz.

Following one of the worst weeks in the history of album sales comes one of the liveliest, and boy was it needed.

Thanks to a record-shattering first day at iTunes and traditional retail (where it reportedly sold more than 435k), IDJ artist West will debut at #1 on next Tuesday HITS Top 50 Album Chart, easily surpassing 800k in sales.

That would more than top Linkin Park previous one-week high of 625k set in May and Rascal Flatts?2006 high of 722k. In fact, it would be the biggest sales debut since West last album Late Registration bowed in August 2005 with 860k.

Shady/Aftermath/Interscope

Shady/Aftermath/Interscope rapper 50 Cent, who has loudly declared he retire if West album sold more than his, better start boning up on his golf game, because Curtis will land at #2 with a still-impressive 600k, plus or minus.

Kenny Chesney will have to settle for third place with his new album Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates on SBMG Nashville, which will bow at #3 with around 450k.

The only other album of note to hit retail is the latest edition of the Gray Anatomy soundtrack from Disney's Hollywood Records.

The market was down a little less than 4% vs last week, down about 23% vs same week last year and now down 14.5% year-to-date

And here is the Soundscan One Day sales....

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Kanye West looks set to win the closely watched duel with rival rapper 50 Cent for the No. 1 slot on next week's U.S. pop album chart, according to preliminary sales data issued Wednesday.

West's "Graduation" sold an estimated 437,000 copies during its first day of release Tuesday, ahead of 310,000 for 50 Cent's "Curtis" and 107,000 for country star Kenny Chesney's "Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates," according to a new "Building Chart" devised by tracking firm Nielsen SoundScan.

The Building Chart gives an early look at how the race is shaping up for SoundScan's final charts, which post projected national sales each Wednesday morning, extrapolated from a panel of merchants representing more than 90% of the U.S. music market.

Some pundits project West will surpass 750,000 copies for the week, breaking the 2007 record of 623,000 copies held by rock band Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight." But West did better with his last album, 2005's "Late Registration," which debuted with 860,000 copies. 50 Cent also will fall far short of the 1.1 million start for his last album, 2005's "The Massacre."

HITS:

YOUR WEAKEND TOP 10: It's not your imagination, folks. There are three albums slated to go over 400k this week, with IDJ's Kanye West topping the list with a total that will go over 850k and could hit 900k, making it by far the year's biggest debut. Shady/Aftermath/Interscope's 50 Cent will do between 625-650k for Curtis, while SBMG Nashville's Kenny Chesney is headed for 420-430k and #3.

The four-week champ, Disney's High School Musical 2, will remain in the Top 5 with 115-120k. The rest of the Top 10 includes Interscope/A&M's Fergie (40-45k), Disney's Hannah Montana 2 (35-40k), Universal Republic's Colbie Caillat, New Line's Hairspray and Roadrunner's Nickelback, all at 30-35k, with Jive/ZLG's Justin Timberlake rounding out the leaders with 25-30k. the industry definately needed a week like this to come along, last week was the worst sales week ever.

And wow at Justin for returning to the top 10, HBO worked. Maybe the album can pass 4 million already, it's been at 3 million since the year started

Yeah- even though the HBO concert drew a mere 1.1m or so with the initial broadcast, his album still saw a good bump.

They re-played it several times as well.

These gigantic openings will be on this week's charts. The final figures are not out.

Album sales are down 15% from 2006.

The major reason for the decline is that over 900 music stores closed in December/January.

illegal downloading/burning is the major reason!

well, I think downloading has hurt, but like I said in the used thread, I think the passe wholesale pricing strategies of the music industry, especially compared to how prompt the movie industry is with DVD's (and don't for a second believe piracy isn't an issue there as well) has really killed CD sales, because nobody wants to spend $15 on a cd that was $15 ten years ago, therefore sales keep going down further and further in the crapper. DVD prices go down further and further as the newness depreciates, and people still buy DVD's. The music industry wouldn't be in such a rut if the companies changed their pricing strategies. I know it's all about $$$$$, but wouldn't you rather sell 1000 copies a week at $7 then 52 copies a week at $15?

I'm surprised how well Feist has done considering her audience is the people who bought Tori and Bjork's latest album, and both of those albums struggled to reach 100k, you'd think those two would far outsell Feist on name alone, plus they have had better singles this album.

Guest Bad Robot

Feist is getting a lot of attention since being featured in the iPod nano ad.

Also, I don't think her audience is the Bjork/Tori audience at all. Bjork & Tori are about 99% cult fans at this point.

Feist is still a relatively new artist getting good buzz/press. She appeals to a broader crowd than Bjork/Tori (she's not nearly as idiosyncratic as those two) and is getting better promo. I see her 1234 video almost every morning on VH1 (whereas I have not seen a Tori or Bjork video since the 90s on TV).

I'd say she's more comparable to the Death Cab for Cutie/Postal Service/KT Tunstall types of AAA artists with a hint of alternative.

WEST IS BEST!

50 Cent and Chesney Score Top 3, Disney Has Two in Top 5, But Kanye's Total is Year's Best

September 18, 2007

The people have spoken, and it’s Graduation day for IDJ’s Kanye West.

In the much-celebrated battle between the dapper rapper and Shady/Aftermath/ Interscope gangsta icon 50 Cent, West wins going away, with a first-week total of 930k that tops his own Late Registration, which bowed at #1 in August 2005 with 860k in sales.

Fiddy has nothing to be ashamed of, as Curtis tallies 660k, which represents the second-largest one-week total of the year, topping Linkin Park’s 625k back in May.

SBMG Nashville’s Kenny Chesney doesn’t exactly have to go hat in hand, either, with an impressive 400k tally for Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates, which would have been an easy #1 in any other week but this one.

Those three together represent sales of about 1,000 copies less than the entire 200 best-selling albums totaled last week.

Walt Disney Records is the week’s other big winner, with two in the Top 5, including High School Musical 2, once more in six figures at 130k, and Hannah Montana 2--Meet Miley, while Hollywood Records sports the next highest debut, the third volume of the Grey’s Anatomy soundtrack at #13.

A&M/Interscope’s Fergie (#6), Roadrunner’s perennial Nickelback (#7), Universal Republic’s surging Colbie Caillat (up 22% at #8), UTV/UMe’s Now 25 (#9) and Jive/ZLG’s Justin Timberlake (up 11% at #10) round out the Top 10.

Other chart newcomers include Trisha Yearwood’s Greatest Hits on MCA Nashville (#21) and Atlantic’s B5 (#28).

MTV VMA exposure appears to have helped strong gainers such as Interscope maestro Timbaland (#27-12, +47%), Geffen’s Common (#20-15, +25%) and Def Jam/IDJ’s Video of the Year winner Rihanna (#21-18, +31%). Other double-digit increases are registered by A&M/Octone’s Maroon 5 (#19-17, +14%), RCA’s Daughtry (#22, +16%), Reprise’s Michael Buble (#28-25, +10%) and WB’s Talib Kweli (#38-30, +12%).

Interscope Best New Artist Grammy candidate Feist uses the ubiquitous exposure of the new Apple Nano TV spot to move back into the Top 50 at #37, with more than double her previous week’s sales total.

Next week, a slew of new releases will crack the Top 50, including James Blunt, Chamillionaire, Barry Manilow, Rebe McEntrire, Twista, U.K. opera phenom Paul Potts and KT Tunstall.

Well, amazing week-to-week rebound at least.

And I think Kanye's first week numbers prove that 1,000,000+ sales weeks for individual albums are not *completely* a thing of the past, and will happen every once in a blue moon in the future. He came so close and the holidays aren't even here yet.
