The Ashton By election result is yet another nail in the coffin for Dutton and the Liberal party.   Labor got home easily in a so called shock result as normally a safe conservative seat but Australians are proving that voters are turning away in droves from the far right that have taken over the Liberal Party.  So proud to be Australian at this time and also proves that Murdoch's shocking bias in the media does not cut through anymore.

Not really a shock if you are paying attention, but the Murdoch and Costello media will portray it that way. Media coverage of the vote count on Saturday night was hilarious in its stupidity.

Voters were pretty clear - they reject corruption, climate change denial, transphobia, homophobia, and the persecution of other minorities by the right wing of the liberal party. the drumming up of a fake war with China (especially the large Chinese-Australian population in parts of Aston), and especially don't like helicoptoring in a fake candidate who pretends she understands the struggles of the constituents of the outer suburbs (she is a highly paid lawyer who lives in Brunswick, sat on the Melbourne City Council and who's husband is the national politics Editor of the hideous Herald-Sun - a right win rag that bashes Melbourne and Dan Andrews every day).

    Mary Doyle - well done!

Great news! I was back in Melbourne last week, made sure I voted! Its astonishing how the media was sooooooooo one-sided, and now having to make up excuses for being so out of touch with the people. Why cant they just accept that voters just dont want that rubbish.

It was actually nice to be living outside Australia and not having to listen to Australian (politics) news all the time, but when I got back to Australia, the biggest news headline was all about some car accident from years ago, than Dan was not in. The media went to any length they could to try and pull him down. Luckily the people of Victoria are (mostly) smarter than that.

First it was the car accident (where we wasn't the driver), then it was the stupid conspiracy theories around the stairs he fell down where he fractured his spine and broke ribs in 2021, then it was the fact that he is 'too arrogant' to be Premier and all the made up media stories about how much Victorians hate him (a very loud minority do because of the drivel they have been fed by the media, and only their views were amplified by the press). All of this crap on the front page of every newspaper and in all news bulletins every day for weeks before the election.

Meanwhile the opposition leader was referred to the independent anti-corruption commission (IBAC) for illegal Election Campaign actions DURING the election campaign and the opposition party was campaigning on lowering taxes and reducing debt while AT THE SAME TIME promising new spending that was estimated to add over $30bn to debt while never providing any costings to the voting public.....and the media was basically crickets.

Ha ha ha.  Despite all the headlines, vicious articles, conspiracy theories etc,  ( this photo below of awful headlines and articles in Murdoch's daily paper )  the Australian Labor party romped home.

    I am SOOOOOO happy Jan!!!

The media campaign was reprehensible - mostly led by Murdoch and Costello (who is Chairman of Nine Entertainment which owns Channel 9, The Age and The Sydney Morning-Herald - and a former Liberal party politician). But honestly even the ABC went right off it's skis worse so than at the Federal election. Almost the entire media was campaigning against the Labour government and particularly Dan Andrews. It is sickening to see

  4. How many thousands of negative articles have been written about Meghan Markle just since the Queen died? And she has done exactly what in that time except support her husband and (God forbid) hold his hand?

    It is exhausting.

The whole Royal Family seem like a bunch of out-of-touch douche-bags, so the fact that she is the only one singled out for extreme hate and criticism by big parts of the media is pretty telling....

Outrage as Australians discover former prime minister secretly gave himself five additional ministries

Incumbent prime minister says he ‘cannot conceive of the mindset’ that enabled Scott Morrison to appoint himself to additional positions while PM

Australia news live updates: former PM Scott Morrison says he didn’t reveal secret portfolio appointments over concerns they would be ‘misinterpreted’

    8256.jpg?width=700&quality=85&auto=forma

Scott Morrison secretly appointed himself to five additional ministries while Australia’s prime minister, in what his successor has labelled an “unprecedented trashing of the Westminster system”.

The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, said on Tuesday he was waiting on legal advice over any possible ramifications of the secret appointments and was “open to reforms and suggestions” so the situation did not reoccur.

Morrison now faces calls to resign from parliament over the revelations, including from one of his former ministers. Karen Andrews, a former minister for home affairs, which is one of the departments to which Morrison appointed himself, said: “This is totally unacceptable, for a prime minister to behave in this manner undermines everything that a federal government constitutionally should stand for.”

Morrison remains a backbencher in the Liberal party, now led by his former defence minister Peter Dutton. Dutton defended Morrison’s actions and accused Albanese of attempting to make “political capital” over the situation. Dutton said he had been unaware of the appointments, but would wait on the legal advice before commenting any further.

In a statement on Tuesday, Morrison apologised to his former ministerial colleagues “for any offence” and described the arrangements “as a ‘break glass in case of emergency’ safeguard” during the coronavirus pandemic.

Between March 2020 and May 2021, Morrison appointed himself to the health, finance, industry, science, energy and resources, home affairs and treasury portfolios without the public’s knowledge, and in some cases, without alerting the existing minister.

There was no official announcement or record of Morrison’s swearing in for any of the five portfolios. His self-appointment gave him decision-making powers for those crucial areas if he decided he needed them. That made him the final arbiter, although few within his cabinet knew he held those powers.

The governor general, David Hurley, swore Morrison in as minister to the portfolios based on Morrison’s own advice.

    1000.jpg

Australian ministers are usually publicly sworn in by the governor general with cameras present, and their appointments announced to the parliament where it is officially recorded.

The appointments became public knowledge after two News Corp journalists, promoting their book on the Morrison government’s pandemic response, revealed the then-prime minister had sworn himself in as health minister, and as finance minister at the beginning of Australia’s first wave of Covid.

Just over a year later, Morrison used the same constitutional article to have himself sworn in as resources minister, overriding a decision made by the existing resources minister, who had been hitherto unaware he was sharing the portfolio with the prime minister.

In May 2021, Morrison added the last two portfolios to his list without the knowledge of either existing minister. The then treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, had been one of his closest confidants but said he had not known Morrison had also taken on treasury.

The revelations have thrown the Australian government, and public, into a spin, with no one able to explain why the appointments were necessary or why the Australian public had been kept in the dark.

“I cannot conceive of the mindset that has created this,” Albanese said.

“I cannot conceive of the way that the government has functioned in a way where they said that ‘I’m the prime minister of Australia and I’d also like to be in charge of health, finance, treasury, industry, science, home affairs, resources.’ I cannot conceive of how that occurs. And I cannot conceive of how a cabinet allows that to happen.”

Before the news of the five portfolios was made public, Morrison had said he did not recall appointing himself to more than three additional positions, but said the moves were necessary to “safeguard” the portfolios.

Rather than apologise, he is on Facebook laughing about it.

Also, two 'journalists' at a Murdoch paper were told about this before the most recent election and didn't report on it. It has only come out now because one of the two is releasing a book in which these actions are described.

Good riddance to this *UNT. He should resign from his seat too since he has already said he will not attend parliament this year again (WTF). The two journo's should be sacked and the Governor General has to resign....

Is there any legal way to secede from the U.S.? I mean, New York, California (among other states under democratic control). Those states co-finance the majority of red states because those fly over and bible belt states have economies of developing countries and usually have budget deficits. Why should those liberal states with their high taxes pay for those states? Especially if those red states have an unequal amount of power based on the number of their citizens and use this power to not only restrict the civil rights of their very own citizens but the citizens of those states that have to support them financially. I don't mind that there are financial transfers (we have that in Germany as well) but I think that basic rules in democracy should apply to all states equally.

If the Independent State Legislature Theory (which underlies the North Carolina gerrymandering case) is endorsed by the Supreme Court next year then I would think that a break up of the Union becomes quite possible in the long term

    This.

Since 2016, a slice of American progressives have been spending their time attacking the Democratic Party and their politics instead of devoting their energy to fighting the real enemy, the Republican Party and more precisely its fundamentalist slice which has taken control and is reshaping the country at frightening speed. In a two-party system, the lesser evil to block this movement is to vote and support the Democratic party even though we all know they are not a very progressive party, but in the context of the American political system they are the lesser evil . Anyway, this discussion was relevant in 2016, today it is already too late. The Republicans have reshaped the political system so that they have control and do what they want.

    It is code red now.

The Supreme Court is going to ensure Republican control of the country in perpetuity when they decide next year on the North Carolina gerrymandering case (they indicated today that they will take up this case in their next session).

Given recent SC rulings that are completely untethered from the law, the court is likely to decide that only State Legislatures have any say in how elections are run and that State Courts, the Voting Rights Act and independent redistricting commissions etc cannot overrule legislative decisions on how voting districts are decided, how elections are run, who can vote, how votes are counted, and how Electoral College votes are determined.

With Republicans controlling both houses of legislatures in 30 states right now and with impossible to overcome state legislative gerrymanders in many of them already, they will be able control the outcome of federal elections with the SC's blessing......

Unless Manchin and Sinema agree to vote to remove the filibuster at least for the VRA before November elections (and also for some version of Roe), it is game over.

I am a bit confused by this post.  The Republican party at the moment represents the far right, the nutcases and the religious fanatics.  Conservative voters who are fair minded should be horrified by the Trump era.  This supreme court decision overturn was caused by Trump putting extreme religious fanatics in the Supreme Court.

So why are Democrats getting the blame for this ?  If the American people choose to embrace ultra right wing, racist, sexist conspiracy theorists,  then it is with the American people themselves.

There is so much Democrat bashing going on atm ......by Democrats (and bots and the media and Republicans) - it will impact voting turnout in November - which will only ensure a slide into fascism. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Yeah but watch the media start to rehabilitate his image so that he's a kind hearted family man who loves puppies and the footy. The Guardian of all newspapers (!) has already started this morning with an article mentioning his "his more compassionate side" where his colleagues paint him as a friend of the poor. 🤮 https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/may/22/peter-dutton-firms-as-next-liberal-leader-amid-fight-over-future-of-the-party

Good luck with that! They will certainly try, but he is too evil for it to be successful. Plus a Federal ICAC is gonna bring him down on a number of fronts....

I know I am sounding so ageist here,  but have noticed a lot of older people sadly are incredibly influenced by Murdoch newspapers. It is what a lot mainly read, so their influence is staggering.  in comparison to them not reading social media or articles online from different ideology rather than Rupert Murdoch.   Spoke to 2 people on the phone who are over the age of 70.  Both relatives who were once staunch Labor voters. They were virtually frothing at the mouth about issues that are now being used as dog whistle tactics in the Herald Sun such as trans people in sport and the false article that said Labor was banning the word "Mother'"    They kept quoting the Herald Sun etc and their right wing writers.  It is truly frightening how Murdoch has turned the daily newspapers into right wing propaganda and also how people be so easily conned.  I just hope that his support for Scott Morrison does not influence too many to turn their backs on what they have always believed in.

The media in this country is shocking. I cannot believe none of the mainstream media, including the ABC, in any way holds the current government to account for ANYTHING. Yet the opposition is dragged through the mud for any made up bullshit spun out of the prime ministers office and is required to cost every election commitment in excruciating detail, and if they can't answer every single question, are absolutely caned for it. The differential in how the media talks about the two major parties is staggering, and forget coverage of independents and smaller parties....

I think there was already a topic for this before the forum lost a few weeks of posting.

Just interested to see what the other Aussie members are thinking. Will be finally free of Morrison and 9 years of Liberal shit leadership or will the Murdoch and media propaganda and Clive Palmers fake party get the liberals over the line again?

Im excited as i live in Mackellar and we have a good independent who may actually win and boot the liberals out here who have had the seat for like 50years!

I am getting angry at that Transphobe from Warringah she is the electorate next to mine so i have to see her face and lies every day on my way to work. Horrible woman. Thankfullyno one likes her when she is on the community i see no one take her fliers or speak to her and she has hardly any helpers where as Zalia has so many helpers and signs everywhere and lots of support.

Praying for change in government for our future and the environment and to get rid of the corrupt bastards and Murdoch monopoly.

I've voted already. LNP last, UAP second last.

Deves wasn't 'captain's picked' into Warringah to win that seat, Zali will win that easily. Scummo put her into that seat to dogwhistle to deeply religious people in seats like Parramatta that he is 'their guy'. He is disgusting, she is disgusting.

The extremely high volumes of pre-poll and postal vote suggest to me that the days are numbered for Scottie from Marketing.....

  12. What an absolute legend! He wins this year's Australian Open, coming from 2 sets to love down and eventually winning in 5 hours 30mins. This gets him to 21 Slam wins (he has won exactly 33% of all Slams he has entered - 21 of 63)

    Vamos!!

  13. The people I feel most sorry for are those men still stuck in that hotel after all this time. I follow a few of them on Twitter and it is heartbreaking. They still hold out hope that ND will speak out on their behalf.

I think they are going to be very disappointed.

Agree totally. Tennis Australia and Craig Tilley have been helping him despite that the state government of Victoria and the Federal government had been saying - no unvaccinated international players could compete. Tennis Australia even gave him the paperwork meant for Australians who might have legitimate medical exemptions. I have no respect for Tennis Australia who bent over backwards to help him play in the Australian open.

Tennis Australia is in this up to their eye-balls. They have lied and been incredibly deceitful, as well as leaking lots of shit to stir the pot.

One of the clearest things in all of this - Craig Tiley has GOT TO GO in order for the Australian Open to start improving its reputation going forward....

:rotfl: this is Gold. Everyone is saying that they should read the actual news like this leaked footage where they are saying exactly what they think !

    Hilarious

And Djoker is such an asshole. Everything about this whole thing STINKS. It is soo lucky that he tested positive for covid on Dec 16 (passed the exemption submission deadline of Dec 10 but who cares about that). If he hadn't tested positive for covid, what exactly was his plan for coming? Why did he apply for an exemption in November if he didn't have any grounds for getting it then????

To me, the worst offender in all this is Craig Tiley and Tennis Australia, who were told repeatedly that prior covid infection was not grounds for an exemption for a visa, but went ahead and used that as the grounds for the Djoker's exemption anyway. How has Tiley not been fired?????????

  16. 47 minutes ago, Junior said:

    this was before he left

    LOL OMG

So he calls people who called for his firing because he refused to take a vaccine that is designed to protect his cast mates from getting covid since they would have to do scenes with him in close proximity without masks  - morons, bigots and horrible horrible people and that he would 'never do that to them' (but he is happy to call them morons, bigots and horrible horrible people)......

Please don't come back to Australia FUCKWIT
