Yeh your right !
It will be telling if she goes back to a traditional record company after this!
But I agree with your example.
The example wasn't great, but iasonas summed it up pretty well. Labels have years/decades building relationships with retail, radio, and press.

But what’s the answer/conclusion ?
Madonna must care she ruled the charts for 25 years.....and she does still go out and actively promote and perform!
Why not hire someone else in to carry promotion for her music if she gets zero from Interscope?
Is it money ? Would it cost too much? Surly that’s why Guy O gets a yearly salary?
The answer/conclusion is simple: If want the support and connections that a record label can provide, you have to have a proper record deal. Period. You can't be Bernie Sanders trying to win the Democratic nomination and act surprised that the party isn't supporting you. Maybe that's not a great analogy, but it's the first thing I thought of. It might not seem fair, but that's the way the world works.

Without a proper label nothing is going to change. It will be like MDNA and Rebel Heart all over again.
No manager has the connections a label has.
A label like Warner has local marketing, promotion and radio teams in every single developed country in the world. How could Guy push the song in Germany, France, Brazil etc..? We're talking about a global superstar. He can't do anything from some office in LA.
If you count how many employees Warner has in every country, we're talking about THOUSANDS of people who worked hard on a LOCAL level to promote her singles and albums. People who spoke the local language, with connections and a budget they had from each country's Warner subsidiary.

Yeah, a while ago. Per Madonna Infinity: https://www.sendspace.com/file/cjxdbe
Disappointing how hands off she seems to have been on MDNA. I really like that album.
-
She also didn't play an instrument, which automatically leads to the perception that you don't actually write music, etc.
I honestly find it hilarious how surprised these producers always sound. I guess nobody actually reads these interviews except fans.
I hope that having him tour with her is a sign that she liked him and will maybe work with him again.
-
I much prefer this version to the album version. Really cool/interesting production. I think the final version is too overworked. I don't mind the rap per se, but I do like the instrumental break on this version.
The first demo is a total cheesefest. The darker production was the way to go.

I think 2018 is realistic. And I think my hope for a shorter, more focused album could be possible given that RH was such a big production in terms of time and the number of collaborators.
Also, I think one of the reasons the wait between albums feels especially long is that she stopped releasing singles from soundtracks and compilations in between. We had:
WTG soundtrack and YCD compilation between TB and LAP
IB, TIC, and "This Used to Be My Playground" between LAP and Erotica
"I'll Remember" and "Goodbye to Innocence" between Erotica and BS
STR, "Freedom," and Evita between BS and ROL
"Beautiful Stranger," Ricky Martin duet, and TNBT soundtrack between ROL and Music
"Die Another Day" between Music and AL
That's when things started to slow down. At least we got Celebration between HC and MDNA, but otherwise she's been very quiet between releases. I guess we can just be happy for the leaks?
-
Nice, but I guess they forgot it was actually released in 2014!
In the New York Times today, Bitch, I'm Madonna is cited as one of the best singles of the year!
True, but that was long after most publications released their Best of 2014 lists, and what little impact LFL did have, it had in 2015.
-
I do want a new album and I hope she goes in the opposite direction in terms of scope. RH was big, long, and (too?) ambitious. I'd like to see something simple - 10 or 11 songs, one or two producers. Give it 2 me!
-
Torn between Blond Ambition and Girlie Show. BA is obviously iconic, and she was at a creative/commercial peak at that time. But part of me wants to say GS because that was the first tour I COULD have gone to and almost did but tragically both opportunities fell through. Would be great to finally experience that.

This is the album I wish she'd released (considering only officially released songs/versions):
Living for LoveDevil Pray
Ghosttown
Illuminati
Joan of Arc
HeartBreakCity
Body Shop
Inside OutWash All Over Me
Best Night
Messiah
Rebel Heart
Borrowed Time (Bonus Track)
Graffiti Heart (Bonus Track)
I do like a few of the other tracks, but I just think a shorter, more serious album would have been extremely well-received.

This has long been one of my favorite things to ponder.
In 1995, every single song Madonna had released for twelve years was a top 40 hit in the USA. Hell, with the exception of Bad Girl (#justiceforBadGirl), they were all top 20 hits, and Rain was basically a top ten (actually it was on some charts). She had just enjoyed three of her biggest hits in a row, I'll Remember, Secret, and Take A Bow.
She then gave us two of her most creative videos ever, Bedtime Story and Human Nature.
I've often wondered what she thought when she was filming/promoting Bedtime Story. Did she think: "I've had radio hits for more than a decade, and now I'm going to release what I want no matter how uncommercial." Or did she think: "Radio is loving me, of course they will play this experimental dance track."
In this day and age, we can all speculate that if Madonna released Nothing Fails as first single from AL, it would have smashed, and half the time we're just having fun speculating. But I think it's safe to say that in 1995, had she released Don't Stop and Forbidden Love, she would have had two more top 10 hits in America.
As always in her career, I'm happy things went the way they did. We got two amazing videos, followed by her return to the top 10 with the exquisite You'll See, amazing performance in Evita, and then the fucking fantastic second half of her music career.
But I always wonder, did she think Bedtime Story and Human Nature would be top 40 hits in the States? Or did she think "fuck it, these are the statements I want to make now."
My thoughts on this haven't changed much since 1995. I remember (at 16 years old) thinking that BS could be a hit, especially since she was coming off her longest running #1 in the U.S. ever. I think she felt confident after being back on top and decided to release a song she obviously loved and thought was cool (it was obvious to me that if Erotica hadn't "underperformed" she might have released an album entirely like BS, as she loved Nellee Hooper's work and Bjork's album).
Then it flopped.
And my thoughts on what happened next haven't changed much either. I've always thought "Forbidden Love" would have been the best/safe choice to follow-up TAB, or "Don't Stop," which was getting airplay in some smaller markets. But I think instead of playing it safe, she said "Fuck it" and went with "Human Nature" as a sort of "Fuck you" and to close the chapter on the Sex era.
We got two great singles (and videos) out of it, but I do think she could have scored one or two more bona fide hits from that album (and sold at least another million CDs) had she played it safe. Anyway, that's my take.

The artwork is fun. The rest of the project was totally botched, from the typos in the liner notes, the subpar new songs, the bad edits, flop singles in place of #1 songs, etc.

Golden circle were $200 which was one of the most expensive concert tickets ever seen in Australia at that time. My dad gave me just a standard ticket as an early xmas present & it cost hime $77 i think which was ridiculously expensive as well. I think he commented that it was more than hed ever spent on a concert ticket and was a few days wage i believe. Theres tv news on youtube where people are saying the price of tickets was more than their rent at the time but it was worth it to see Madonna.
Yeah, I remember my mother went to get my tickets for GS and they were $80 at one of those ticket brokers at the mall. That was considered so expensive that she didn't end up buying them and I was devastated (and never got to see M live until DWT eight years later!). I think the average ticket prices were around $35 back then? It's crazy.

Like a Prayer
True Blue
Rebel Heart (deluxe, obvs)
Ray of Light
American Life

LFL is definitely her best LEAD single since HU, but I like all of the COADF singles better. Ultimately it's the vocals that keep LFL from reaching that level.

What's the deal with "Queen"? I remember someone on here saying it wasn't actually recorded during the RH sessions? I find that hard to believe, since it doesn't sound like it fits with any other era, but sonically and lyrically it's right in line with what she did with RH. But it's also not listed on the Wikipedia page of Madonna's unreleased songs. All of the other demos are included in the list of leaks.
Any clue?

^ The hair is very ROL.

There are my three picks as well. I truly believe they're her best and most important albums.

It's pretty faithful to the original like most of the mixes but appears to have been beefed up slightly for the live show.
It was definitely faithful to the original, but a more modern mix. And the guitar solo part was pretty different. Would love to hear a studio version of this.

I agree that something stripped down would be nice. I doesn't have to be acoustic though. "Heaven" is beautiful. I do think she should do 10-12 songs maximum. Keep it simple. Every song should be either single-worthy or super-weird or personal. And I think she should stick to one or two producers, even if she has 15 writers per song.

Me too. Part of it must be ignorance. Surely she couldn't have expected MDNA to do as badly as it did, especially worldwide. Maybe Guy convinced her that her success had less to do with Warner Bros. that it actually did and that she could continue on name recognition alone. Sadly, based on what she's said in interviews and such, I think she probably chalks is up to ageism, not terrible management.
