  1. I don't have that opinion. American Life was her making the music Guy thought she should make, and Confessions was her going back to being her pop slut self. Most of the lyrics on Confessions are not light at all if you look beneath the surface.

Hard Candy was her trying to get a US hit, clearly. Gimme All Your Luvin, well I have NO idea what that is. I'll decide that when I hear the album.

  2. It is not just a single. If it flops it's going to seriously damage her chance of staying relevant. That is why people are so up in arms about it.

Its fair to say that it wont matter in terms of her longterm legacy and for most of us in the bigger picture of our lives. Life will go on. But it still matters.

Madonna will always been relevant to one degree or another.

  3. I think shes finally getting her way on releasing such a lackluster first single. Just like she wanted Candy Shop as the first single from HC. Also the Super Bowl has something to do with it.

I think everyone who dislikes or hates the new song are being a bit over dramatic. It's just a single. Never mind what the actually album as a whole will sound like--that's where my concern is at! If the album sucks I'll join the rest of you but I like Gimme and could care less about Master-boring-piece.

  4. I completely agree with you about AL being a companion piece to Erotica, They were both statement albums. Except Erotica was provocative while AL was preachy. However, both kind of flopped and lost her some fans. Both were distant and forced. Erotica, bar two or three tracks, was solid, AL was, well...

I L-U-V both albums--their my children. Madonna at her most interesting and idiosyncratic. Not enough love and attention given to these LPs. I hope the new album won't be far off quality wise to these projects.

  5. If we consider LAP, ROL and AL to be "age appropriate" works, then honestly I don't think the public nor her diehard fans would accept that kind of album from her every single time she releases music. I know many are hungry for something "mature" from her at this point after COADF and HC but imagine if she had done 2 more AL like albums instead of "dance" albums. After ROL, Music and AL it seemed the public and fans at that point were hungry for some more "classic" Madonna. The Madonna that liked to have fun, dance and party.....aka the one we fell in love with in the 80's.

I think anybody who was a fan following closely during the '98-'03 era would think that she made a permanent shift to "mature artiste" with her music, partly due to her age. In retrospect though that seems to have been just a period of experimentation for her. More often than not in her career Madonna has played the "pop star" role and it seems like that's where she wants to be right now. I do hope in the future we get some more stuff like we got during the '98-'03 years but even if we do get another introspective "mature" era such as that, it can almost be guaranteed that a "Music" or a "Hung Up" isn't far behind, even if Madonna is 70 years old by that point. Well crafted but sometimes "fluffy" dance/pop songs are her roots and I don't think she'll ever completely abandon that because of her age. I don't think she should either. "Hung Up" sounds like the words of a love sick 16 year old so if she can pull that off at 47 years old, why can't she pull something equally as simple yet FABULOUS at any age?? For better or worse she's stretching the life of a female pop star by doing what she's doing. The Britney's, Gaga's and Katy's of the world will be thanking her in 30 years time.

Perry won't transition. Britney will die. Gaga will still be around as a cult act.

  6. Madonna should do whatever she wants. Express yourself, don't repress yourself. There's no reason why she has to turn away from the youth direction of today's music market. She could release a ROL style "serious"-adult-mature album but remember you fuckers rejected American Life. Now you're playing for it. Good. I hope she makes a whole bunch of Tranet Jackson throw away tracks for the rest if her career. Go Madonna. Do whatever the fuck you want to do.

  7. Her legacy is intact. She's revolutionized the pop music world in too many ways at this point to have a song or even a whole flop album ruin her forever. The day will (and maybe it has already) come where she's NOT going to be the trendsetter on the forefront of music and fashion like the Madonna most of us grew up with in the 80's and 90's. That kind of thing doesn't go on and on forever, it's amazing and unprecedented how long she's been able to do that anyways. This may not be what diehard fans want, but realistically, Madonna can pretty much just "coast" at this point and she would remain successful and relevant. By that I mean put out easily digestible singles for the masses and throw the deeper stuff on the albums and mainly focusing on the tours.

Sorry but anybody who worries about a perfume, clothing line or gym ruining her musical legacy needs to get a grip. The only people who even CARE ENOUGH to have an opinion about these things are her diehard fans. REALLY....what casual fan is going to be like "I really love her music but that damn perfume she released just put me off her!"? I mean who does that?? I don't think most people even follow her closely enough to know about all of these things. Those projects aren't even necessarily for us diehards anyways. It's like the fans who got mad about the children's books...I mean WHO CARES?? It's not for you, ignore it and move on. The books didn't exactly RUIN any sort of legacy. She had massive hit songs and albums afterwards and who besides us is even talking about those books these days? The only book the general public may speak of when it comes to Madonna is SEX. These little business endeavors she does are the norm for celebs these days, nobody cares.

    Thank you baby.
