  1. I don't think people were expecting a circus act. A lot of people wanted to see someone who's more progressive like Elizabeth Warren.

And nobody needs a lesson in democracy, but don't make those silly comments about me going bunjee jumping or looking for a lover. That's stupid and again, you're not American and don't understand what motivates people to vote. Whether you like it or not, A LOT of people want someone in office they can go have a beer with. Remember the Average Joe guy that the GOP paraded around? Not that it worked, but Americans are just weird that way.

Okay, so you clearly thought about yourself reading my post and were quite affected.

Again with the 'you're not American' - are you really serious with that? Most people don't truly know what motivates people to do what they do, especially in large numbers. That's why opinion polls, focus groups, and political pundits are big business. You don't have any greater claim on that knowledge than anyone else.

And you call me condescending, woah. :rotfl:

I've said before I don't understand critics but here's why: would you critic a dance show if you were not yourself a dancer? Would you critic an English paper if you did not speak English? Or a French paper if you don't speak French? Don't let these things bother you, because the concepts of ARTPOP I spent a lot of time and research a love on.

Watch me stay in this thread and keep giving my view as a 'not American' :sassy:

  2. There are women and men in those cultures that fight it, but they get suppressed, intimidated or killed. And i'm sure there is a silent sizeable minority that wished things were better.

Women I think are similar across the globe in terms of their capacity to dream and wanting a better lot in life (that's not just a western notion). Especially now that globalisation and technology beans around images of alternative lifestyles. However, when you are so completely held back by society you resign to your 'fate'.

How the global community can better support these dissidents, I'm not sure. But invading their countries to 'liberate' them sure isn't the way and only serves to delegitimatise any grassroots revolution.

  3. I was talking about things in general. I'm simply observing. I for one would never cast a vote based on frivolous things like likeability, charisma, etc., but A LOT of people would and do, and will. That's what I'm saying and was trying to say. Yes, I think choosing this unknown Tim Kaine fellow was a huge missed opportunity. Even Miguel said so above and he's a Hillary supporter. But the VP pick doesn't influence my opinion in the slightest. Why does everything that I say get twisted?

Anyway, are you even American? Why do outsiders talk to us Americans in such a condescending way? Not that I ever would, but if I were ever to vote for Trump, so what? I'm not going to go tell you who to vote for in your elections. That's literally the opposite of a democracy. If Trump or Clinton or choosing not to vote speaks to me that's my prerogative.

Settle pettle... that post wasn't in response to you - hence no quote.

I'm just sick of the media treating politics like entertainment. It's all about the horse race, personalities, phony scandals, while policy and the welfare of people barely gets a mention. That's why the media, pundits, political junkies are disappointed Hilary didn't pick someone to add to the entertainment and excitement factor. Excitement seems to matter more than having a good record on the things democrats stand for and proven ability. She really should have picked Carrot Top.

And when did I tell you who to vote for? I don't care what you do so thanks for the schooling on the meaning of democracy but it wasn't needed... :rotfl:

  4. The way I see it. I wouldn't dare go to a country and disrespect their laws and customs. so I don't see why people go to other countries and try and enforce their way of living on everyone.

    Exactly.

Try being an openly gay person, or just a woman that wants to show her knees in their country and see how accommodating they will be...

Change can happen with new generation. It's a cultural thing, the young generation that are here in UK will grow up not wanting this for their daughters. Don't put all these people in one box, a good change will happen.

I wouldn't count on it, second generation muslim migrants can be even more conservative than their parents and there are many cases of their radicalisation.

Pointing at other waves of migration success stories needs to look at why there were successful. I think it was because the people came from countries with a judeo-christian heritage. And even then, there were many teething problems. But at least there was a common foundation in which to bond. Now the West is much more secular and christians on the whole have moderated their views while the muslim world is still highly religious. And unlike other religions, muslims are shackled to some very rigid rules around obedience and how to treat non believers. This makes true integration and living in harmony with non-believers in their decadent countries complicated business.

  5. You know perfectly what i mean. Simplistic answers won't solve anything. "they should, they should...". Some of these people come from little villages in under developed countries, instead of patronizing, it's far better to accept it happens and to find solutions especifically in the places where they live.

I'm serious, how are they to know what is expected in their settlement country if isn't explicitly told to them?

The Netherlands show prospective immigrants a DVD of topless sunbathers and two men kissing. I think that's great.

If it offends them, they can stay in their little village. I'd rather have the limited immigration spots taken up by people that are attracted to liberal values and don't want to simply recreate the backward society they came from while getting the perks of a generous welfare state.

  6. It's not that simple. They think they are doing what is right for the daughter. You can' think in a colonial way with problems like this, but with practical ways to solve it.

Yes it's a failure of the immigration program to impress upon people the laws, values and attitudes of the settlement country.

You don't just go rearranging where the cutlery and plates go when you're a guest in someone's house.

  7. I don't care that people play it, and if it gets them out of the house and active - hurray. But let's not act like it's more than it is and hyperventilate if someone rolls their eyes about it.

Personally I think it's sad that people will get energised over this and defend it to the death, but other things, arguably of more import, get a meh.

It's an escape from reality. The way the world is at the moment I don't blame people from wanting a few mins respite.

Most people's reality is an escape from reality. A lot of people actually need to look up and take notice of the world. The middle and upper class has been super self indulgent in the internet/social media/technology age. Friends have to constantly take photos going out, of me, of them, of food. It then has to be snapchated, instagramed, tweeted. We need to be checked in.The phone needs to checked every 2 minutes. Facebook refreshed. Send them all down the proverbial coal mine for a day or two.

Not you, or most of the people on here. MNationers are quite switched on.

  8. Read earlier that the guy had gay hookups in the run up to the attack and had just divorced his wife,

Sounds similar to the Orlando shooting in that he was having issues with his sexuality.

This is their redemption. Serve Allah and all transgressions will be forgiven. This is why those holy books and the men that draw strength and purpose from them are so deadly.

  9. If Clinton chooses Kaine, I will be EXTREMELY disappointed in her. Extremely. I was really hoping for Warren. Such a let down.

Warren makes no strategic sense - she would over shadow Clinton and highlight the limits of Clinton's progressiveness. Plus there is the age factor and getting centre swinging votes.

And for Warren, the VP really has no power. She has much more power in the senate and can be her own person. She's not going to be a Joe Biden...

  10. So abhorrent

It's so absurd. Why would they to do that, what kind of urge is that?

My comment is in no way condoning his actions, but I guess for him it would be the urge that heteros feel for the opposite sex and homosexuals for the same sex. There is something chemical in the brain that attracts him to young children. For him it's probably just as strong a sexual urge as we might feel - so strong it can't be tempered by the clear feeling of society (and our laws) on the matter. That doesn't make what he did right, because children can't give consent, and even if they did, you would question it. But I'm never left wondering about motive in cases like this...

  11. Norovirus strikes the Republican National Convention

CLEVELAND -- A terrifying word circulated Tuesday at the Republican National Convention: norovirus.

A dozen staffers in the California delegation who had arrived in Cleveland early have fallen ill with the extremely contagious virus, California GOP chairman Jim Brulte said.

The virus causes extreme vomiting and diarrhea and has been known to spread explosively through people in closed places, such as cruise ships, schools and nursing homes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

    :lmao:

Is there nothing Hilary won't do?

  12. Yeah I personally never knew Bette made comments like this.

Pretty sad and ignorant as hell of her.

She of all people should know better.

I can kind of understand where she's coming from, back in her time gays didn't feel the need to mimic hetro relationships - they didn't want to mainstream. Legally they couldn't, but it didn't seem to matter. It wasn't seen as a natural progression from the sexual revolution where one could determine their own relationships free from biblical notions of chastity and ownership - especially the marginalised and stigmatised gays. Sharing of partners, etc. and other loose arrangements were big part of gay culture, as Larry Kramer's Faggots described. Then Aids came along and things had to change. But this is the period in which Midler grew up in NYC, singing in gay bathhouses and no doubt having many gay friends who were of that disposition.

BUT of course, times have changed and a lot of middle and upper class gays have made it their life's mission to advance gay marriage as THE issue for gays, and mainstreaming of homosexuality has well and truly taken off.

I guess she should have been more sympathetic of the modern gay and been less flippant?

I'm sometimes envious of the passion that must drive these people. I wish I had the guts and strong conviction to wear a flag cape with my arms akimbo.

The convention on its first day is already such a mess! :rotfl:

    Published on Jul 18, 2016

The floor of the Republican National Convention erupted into chaos Monday amid an attempt by the Never Trump forces to change the rules of the event, but the efforts were defeated, thwarting the movement to stop the real estate mogul's path to the nomination.

Delegates engaged in dueling chants of "roll call vote" and "USA" on the floor after the chair forced a voice vote, and judged that those who favored the existing rules prevailed. Colorado's delegation even walked off of the floor in protest amid the chaos.

The push to force a roll call vote, therefore, was defeated, eliminating the last available avenue for Never Trump forces to unbind delegates. Trump has amassed more than 1,237 delegates through the primary season -- enough to secure the nomination outright.

The Establishment do not want Trump's downfall to be on their hands. They want him to fail on his own. If there is even a whiff of silly buggers, and their man was to the fall, the rabid base will riot.

  13. Quran- 4:15 “If any of your women are guilty of lewdness, take the evidence of four (reliable) witness from amongst you against them; if they testify, confine them to houses until death do claim them. Or God ordain for them some (other) way.”

Quran-24:2 “The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication—flog each of them with hundred stripes: Let no compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by God, if ye believe in God and the last day.”

Quran-17:32 “ Nor come nigh to adultery: for it is a shameful (deed) and an evil, opening the road (to other evils).

Quran-33:33 “stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display.”

But he's not really Muslim! That's not Islam! Islam empowers women... ETC.
